Just wanted to let you all know that I am super busy these days. If you don't see me around much this is why....

Not only do I have my own medical issues and those of my mother to attend to, now I have taken a temporary job with the 2010 US Census.

I am driving daily back and forth as a courier between Yuma and Parker and any points in between. I welcome the opportunity to make some extra cash even if temporarily, even though it is very limiting on my time.

The job will last at least thru March and possibly into April. If you don't see me around much this is why. I will probably at least have some time to check in but can't promise my regular attendance here.

The good thing....I know when I am done you will all still be here. That I can count on.

Have fun! Sounds like something I would do if I was not already working. Thanks for letting us know.

No, if I tell you then I'd have to hunt you down and kill you....

But seriously, I am driving between Yuma and points North ie;, Quartzsite, Parker, Bouse, Ehrenberg, the CRIT (Colorado River Indian Tribes Reservation) and anywhere else they tell me to go. Basically all along the area along the Colorado river. Since I am a river rat, it thrills me to be doing this!!!!

I'm making bank and I gotta say that I am wondering (without getting too political) who is monitoring these operations?

On my first day, I was talking to a guy who told me that there are 550 offices across the US just like the one in Yuma. Just think of the magnitude of this operation. It blows my pea brain!

Since you work for these Census folks I have some questions. It says on the envelope everything will be confidential. No one will find out anything. (so what' the point?) Then it states that YOU MUST BY LAW fill out the form and mail it back, or there is some penalty (but they don't say what the penalty is if you are a slacker). If everything is confidential I guess SOMEONE knows who sent it back and who did not. Which means that the first statement that everything is confidential is not true. So who tattles on the non-compliers, and how do they punish you? I bet the punishment is reading all the answers.

My guess is it's fed into a machine, which would technically keep it confidential. Maybe River can tell us more.

Since I've been a poll worker for 16 years, it reminds me of those people who want to vote provisional ballots which require you to sign the outside of the envelope. One voter complained that her vote would no longer be "secret" if she signed the outside of the envelope. I suppose she had a point, but how else to prevent voter fraud and determine you are truly eligible to vote?

You needed to tell her that once they open the envelope they do not staple the envelope to the ballot! Ha ha! I LOVE to work the polling places. I love it when people come to vote. Call me old fashioned, but it just seems wonderful to me when people vote.

I think the only problem is the poor wording of most things. Any store when you use your debit or credit card in those little machines at the cash register and after you swipe it, and it processes it and flashes: "Is the amount ok." Gee, not really, I'd LOVE for it to be less. It shoud read "Is the amount correct?"

It cracks me up what I see that people write and will print.

I really can't answer your questions adequately.

Since I am a courier, I never had the need to learn how it all works. I just deliver materials, boxes, envelopes, etc back and forth between the sites and the Yuma office.

Every census employee was sworn in on the first day of appointment to never divulge any info we come across for our entire lives.

There really aren't any invasive questions of the form. If a question leaves you feeling insecure, then don't answer it.

The census has been in operation in Yuma since last October. There are numerous phases. The rural areas such as where I live does a canvassing for locations. Also there is an operation where they go to homeless/transient camps and along the river to get an idea of what that will involve.

If an address does not return the form that was sent out this week, then a person has to go to those addresses and do a survey in person.

How they know who the person is sending the form back in is in the bar code.

Linda, as for the signature on the outside of the mail in ballot, I was one who complained big time in Yuma county. Our signature should not be visable to anyone who may pick up the envelope. Apparently, I was not the only one complaining as this last election they changed it. I was happy about that.

I don't disagree, but I wasn't referring to mail-in ballots, specifically provisional ballots. I don't know how you get around that, because there definitely is voter fraud going on out there. If it's a mail-in ballot, that's different because it was sent directly to you by the ROV, so they have some control over it. Anyone can pick up and fill out a provisional ballot at the polling place, though. There has to be some evidence (which is recorded on the envelope as proof of residence) that they do live in the precinct listed, and that they have been validated by photo identification.

Nothing wrong with that, because I agree. In our day, it was considered a privilege you really took seriously. ("In our day"...I feel old, LOL) I still remember when the age was lowered from 21 to 18. My grandmother used to reinforce how important it was for my sisters and me especially since when she was born, women did not have the right to vote in this country. I remember the "hot topic" on the ballot just a few months after I registered (on my 18th birthday) was whether to ban nudity on Black's, a local beach. (I'll bet River remembers that one.) Smile

Take care and drive safely. Will say a little prayer that you are safe while you travel.

Keep us posted on your travels.

I promise, I sent back my census info as soon as it arrived.

Take care!

Gosh, I didn't realize that it has been this long since I haven't visited here. I apologize for that. I have been super busy and stressed. I haven't even really been around the TV to watch any baseball and of course my Pads.

I realize our population here isn't that large so every post becomes important.

If you guys can hold down the fort and I know you can, I will be back as soon as I am no longer working. I hope to work thru June so sometime after that I will get back over here more.

I also have a funeral to attend in SD probably next Friday June 4th. My two friends from high school who are sisters lost their 94 year old Grandma yesterday. I am still close with my friends and their family. Speculation is that the funeral will be the 4th.

On a brighter note, my b-day is June 2nd. I will be 54. Holy crap I am now old. Where ? did all the years go? But....don't feel obligated to wish me Happy B-day as I am not a pomp and circumstance kinda person.

Best wishes to everyone and have a safe and wonderful Memorial day holiday.

Hey babe in the woods.............................I'm 57, so I am your elder!! Ha ha. Happy, happy early birthday if I forget.

Sorry about the passing of the Grandma of your friends. I hope I live a long and healthy life, and am not a burden to my kids at any point.

I posted to you on the other thread asking if you were still working on census stuff. We got three copies in the mail, AFTER I returned the first one.

Would hate to be the person overall in charge of that project. It must make you more gray than the Astros are causing Houstonians to become.

Take care and again HAPPY, HAPPY Birthday!

Hey, River...got your email a couple of a weeks ago, glad to see you posted here too. I sometimes forget to check the OT forum.

Just for you I am going to make a big deal and post in the birthday thread. Smile

Give me a call or drop a line if you would like to meet up at Triple Crown while in town. If you don't have time I understand; I know how those memorial-related things can go.

Hello my forum friends:

I have no real excuse for not posting here. I have been busy among working for the 2010 Census, taking care of my Mom, and taking care of me.

I got krapy news last week and have been following up on that news with the docs.

So far, I have had a colonospy, YUCK. Next week a biopsy on my lung.

As I said I have no excuse.

Thanks for checking up on me. I will be back soon hopefully.
