|After 21 seasons in the major leagues, Rangers third baseman Adrián Beltré has announced his retirement at age 39.
I grew to become a fan in his early years in Los Angeles. His defense was phenomenal, and when he was on an offensive tear, he could carry an entire team.
But he had the misfortune of playing for the Dodgers in transitional days, as ownership switched hands to the McCourts, and following an MVP-like season in 2004, he signed with the Mariners as a free agent.
Beltré may be the next of three Dodger-developed players from the 1990s to enter the Hall of Fame in another team's cap.
"The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
