And with it, one final week before the regular season gets underway.

My Padres were still atop the heap as spring arrived. I am liking many of the things I have seen, lots of signs point to a more exciting season than we have had in many years. Less than 1 week left now until the regular season starts!

And I guess this is a wrap, because both the Grapefruit League and Cactus League have finished play.

Now, we're on to the Final Tune-Ups.

We did not get over to Peoria again, but twice was enough. My Padres were very successful though as it turned out, they left Arizona with an 18-11 record. That was second only to the Athletics who finished in first place of the Cactus League. We have a lot to look forward to and I am anxious to get it going!

I checked up on the Grapefruit League out of curiosity. The Yankees finished first (17-10) and Astros were second.

As camp was starting in mid-February, I posted a few questions about the Dodgers' readiness for 2019, the answers about which I was very concerned. So let me address those now, five weeks later, on Opening Day Eve.

My major concern was about CK and his health, specifically whether he would be ready for Opening Day. That was an answer I didn't really want, which was no--he's opening the season on the IL.

About Corey and Julio, I'm happy to say they do appear to be returning from injuries well rested and healed. Both have played very well working up to this point.

Aside from Clayton, the only issue I'm still holding my breath about is KJ. His cutter isn't the same, but he says he feels healthy and back to normal. I'm hoping he regains form as the season moves on.

Rojo Chingon was just as we expected--steady and reliable, and hopefully able to carry the team through another season. Kike is going to get a lot of playing time at second this year, so let's hope he plays as consistently well as possible. His defense at that position will definitely be a plus, given how steady he's been in preseason.

Unfortunately, Rich Hill is going to begin the season on the IL, too, so that's down two starting pitchers already. As you may remember, Hill was the fall-back guy to pitch Opening Day in Clayton's absence, but now that duty has been delegated to Ryu. I am certainly hoping he fares much better than he did a few years ago (2014, '15?) when he pitched Opening Day at Dodger Stadium and lost, 6-0. I may have to go back and check on who it was he lost to that day. I hadn't felt less enthusiastic about Opening Day until leaving the ballpark that afternoon. Sad
