The first road trip of the season for the Dodgers coincided with a trip to Colorado for the Rockies' season opener, which L.A. won, 10-5. Even KJ made the trip! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. The Dodgers go for the sweep tonight in Colorado, having won the second game of the series, 7-2, behind Walker Buehler. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. First sweep of the season, and the Dodgers have been relentless at scoring runs (yes, it's Coors Field, but many of them were "small ball" runs).
Now it's on to St. Louis! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

We went out for brunch yesterday and watched our game during that, then watched your game later on, at a BBQ at some friends' home. I heard the ESPN crew mentioning how mad the Dodgers were after the Red Sox dominated them in the World series. It could be they will taking out their frustrations all year long on other teams, though I hope not! _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

Well, Dodger fans are taking out their frustrations on Joe Kelly, the hometown boy who was an offseason acquisition but has had a part in all three of the Dodgers' losses in this young season--including last night's opening game in St. Louis. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Well, clearly this version of the Cardinals is not the same one we saw when the Dodgers scorched through a four-game series in St. Louis last August.
Dodgers suffer their first shutout of the year, and their first two-game losing streak of 2019. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I sure hope Kelly figures out what it is that's keeping him from being effective. I understand the bullpen will be deeper when the starters return to the rotation and that can't happen too soon! I also didn't like the problems with RISP coming back to haunt the Dodgers. During the first week of the season they didn't have much trouble with that. Is that supposed to hound them forever? |

The Dodgers won the first of a four-game series played in Milwaukee, last night, behind an excellent outing by starting pitcher Julio Urias in what will probably be his last start for some time. With the rotation due to get Ryu and Rich Hill back this week, the "bullpen starts" will be rarer (barring, forbid the thought, another injury to a starter). _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Another win last night in Milwaukee, then the six-game streak came to an end with an offensive shutdown today. Dodgers can still take three of four with a win tomorrow. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. The Dodgers ended up taking three of four from Milwaukee, and that gives them the season series with the Brewers. Odd to think of the season series with an NL central team over by April 21! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Starting a series in Chicago, the Dodgers got off on the wrong foot immediately when Maeda took the ball and allowed four runs in the first. The Cubs won, 7-2. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. With the Padres applying the pressure these last couple of games in S.D. the Dodgers must step up. Maeda was very disappointing last night. Walker gets the start today though and it's his first career start at Wrigley Field. Dodgers have got to take this series. |

Well, the Dodgers escaped Chicago--just barely!--with a win and wrapped up the road trip at 4-3.
Ross Stripling pitched 4- 2/3 superb shutout innings for L.A. in what will probably be his last start with the rotation returning to full strength. But, both teams struggled to score although the Dodgers did eke one across the plate off Cubs starter Jon Lester in the fifth. While following along on Gameday from work, I'd take a deep breath checking the updates as every Cubs threat was squelched. But then came the ninth inning, and the Dodgers added an insurance run on a sac fly. This would prove to be extremely valuable because, with two out in the ninth, KJ surrendered (yes, another) home run, this one to Albert Almora Jr. So after getting David Bote to strike out to end the game, the final score stood at 2-1. *Whew.*

I don't like Mondays!
Coming from ahead to lose, and to the Jints, no less--not a good way to start out a road trip.
Maeda got the start for L.A. in Oracle Park, and worried me from the beginning that the game would unravel quickly, as was the case in Chicago last week. However, he settled down and pitched five scoreless innings. Another bullpen blow, with a bases-clearing double by Evan (yes, Evan!) erased a 2-0 Dodgers lead and left them trailing, 3-2, which is the way the game ended. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. The opening game of the Dodgers-Padres series elicited a serious buzz around Petco Park as both teams are separated by three games in the NL West. And I will give Padres fans credit; they showed up and cheered on their team, but in the end the Dodgers won, 4-3. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Yesterday's game had a bad ending for Dodger fans, but I don't think headlines describing it as "stunning" are accurate. We've known for awhile KJ isn't the same. Back on the road, this time to Cincinnati, the Dodgers made the most of Great American Ballpark in the series opener against the Reds tonight. Not only did they hit four home runs--Joc, Corey, Cody and Mad Max--but Rich Hill had an exceptionally good start for L.A. in which he controlled the tempo throughout his six innings, striking out ten. Cincy eked out only three hits against Dodger pitching, and the staff finished off its fifth shutout of 2019.
Final score Dodgers 6, Reds 0. Anthony DeSclafani started and took the loss for Cincinnati. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. In contrast to the series opener, Saturday's middle game of the series was quite the opposite, as L.A. lost, 4-0. Walker started for the Dodgers and didn't bring his best game, although the Dodgers' often-steady defense didn't help matters in this one. Westminster's own Tyler Mahle got the start for Cincinnati and notched his first win of the season (Walker's loss was his first of the season). And today we get Baseball at Breakfast for the rubber game! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Now that's more like it--the Dodgers finished their season series with the Reds by taking five of the six games, over a two-week span. Today, it was Ryu again, who started for L.A. and while he was not as sharp as usual, still pitched a superb game with seven more shutout innings to run his scoreless innings streak to 31. He was backed by a solid offensive performance as the Dodgers won easily, 8-3. Two early runs off Reds starer Tanner Roark put the visitors up, 2-0, until the late innings when they exploded for five more from the seventh through ninth. El Executioner hit 2-for-4, Cody slugged his 17th HR, a two-run shot, and Russell Martin added a solo pop as the team registered its 31st win of 2019.
Now, on to Tampa Bay. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

The Dodgers opened their two-game "mini-set" in Tampa Bay with a 7-3 win tonight. CK got the start to move to 4-0 on the season, registering eight Ks over 6 1/3 innings. The Rays started "opener" Hunter Wood, who took the loss after surrendering a first inning run.
Corey, Joc and Rojo Chingon contributed two hits apiece for L.A.. Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez escaped serious injury when, in the seventh inning, he was struck on the upper leg by a line drive and sustained a contusion, but nothing worse. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Well, someone has to post about it although I put it off overnight.
The Dodgers lost last night when a tight game in the late innings turned into a runaway courtesy of their own bullpen. Rich Hill brought his best and limited the Ray to one run on five hits through six innings. Mad Max tied the game at 1 with a home run in the top of the fourth off Rays RHP Yonny Chirinos. As was typical, the Rays had another "opener" start the game--Ryne Stanek, who pitched 1- 2/3 innings.
In relief of Hill, Dylan Floro and Caleb Ferguson allowed the Rays to erupt with a seven-run seventh inning. Floro took the loss for L.A.
These games will happen...better to move on now and take the series when they play in Pittsburgh following an off day today. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Even though Floro gave up a 3 run home run, his ERA is still just barely over 2! If I heard correctly he had only given up 1 run all season to that point!
Dodgers should be fine. I'm glad Pedro Baez didn't get hurt worse. He's doing better than a lot of people expected and one of the more consistent relievers we have. I do worry a bit about Joe Kelly still. The best thing to say about it is the starters have been having good starts and not putting a lot of pressure on the bullpen. That's the way it should be. |

Right--and speaking of Joe Kelly, he's on the bereavement list (for reasons unknown to the public), so Doc has been down by two relievers with Pedro Baez also being unavailable for another day as a precautionary measure.
So tonight the Dodgers started their series in Pittsburgh against yet another "opener"--Michael Feliz--a move that backfired on the Pirates as the Dodgers scored five runs in the first. David Freese's grand slam was the big blow. As Feliz didn't make it out of the first inning, Steven Brault, the son of Kearny Mesa (!), took over and pitched admirably for another 5 2/3 innings, keeping the game in check.
For insurance, the Dodgers tacked on five more to back Walker's solid start on the mound (one run, six Ks, six innings pitched). Another Belli-bomb for Cody, his 18th, came in the seventh. Final score Dodgers 10, Pirates 2, and Ryu takes the mound for L.A. tomorrow. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game.
