It's about time we refamiliarize ourselves with this thread.

Edit: I inadvertently deleted the original post in this thread (sorry, Cathy!) which described the new format.

And the next question is, will this new playoff structure be permanently adopted? Here's some strong opposition to that, for valid reasons.

I am not in favor of having sub-.500 teams in the playoffs. I wish there were fewer teams. I guess they had to increase the excitement since the season was short.

Now we know that, in addition to the division winners already noted, the following teams have locked up berths in the postseason: the Padres, Blue Jays, Yankees, Twins, White Sox, Indians, Astros, Cubs, Reds and Marlins. Of those, most notable to me is the Marlins' return to October for the first time in 17 years--when they last won the World Series in 2003.

Also, of the 23 seasons in which both Florida teams have been in existence, this is the first postseason in which both are competing.

Only the AL Central and NL Central division winners have yet to be decided for seeding purposes.

And the fields are set. Both the Cardinals and Brewers sneaked into the postseason. American League games will begin on Tuesday, and a full slate of eight games including all teams is scheduled for Wednesday. The first round series format is best-of-three and home field sites have been selected based on seedings.

As such, the Dodgers will host the Brewers at Dodger Stadium, and the Padres welcome the Cardinals in to Petco Park. The Water Hoarders will stay home for the offseason.

Here's the schedule.

I don't know how you're going to keep up with all the series, DB. Smile

I really hate this format just because teams with losing records can make it in. Mad

I have a bad feeling this will go permanent and cheapen the playoffs. Sad

Obviously it's only to increase revenue, just like adding the original wild card team was, and then the second wild card team.

We're looking ahead to an October like we've never seen before. So, get your drink of choice, crash helmets on, and settle in for the long haul.

By the way, I won't be posting a thread for every individual series in the first round. I'll post for the Dodgers' and Padres' series, and then another catch-all thread.
