Yeah, you know I was eventually going to get around to this. It's one of the news items that broke while I was gone in early January.
Just ahead of the first back female vice president of the U.S. taking her oath, the first black female coach in the history of professional baseball was hired. Bianca Smith, 29, will be assigned to the team's player development facility in Florida, and will work mainly with position players.
This is also a notable "reversal" move in the history of the organization, given the Red Sox were the last major league team to integrate black players.
Congratulations to Bianca! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

This would have been so unthinkable back in our day growing up. I wish her much success. Millions of women will be doing that. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |
