I guess this has happened more than once or something like it. Maybe it does not qualify as "strange" anymore. S.F. pitcher Hunter Strickland hurt his hand punching a door at AT&T Park out of frustration, after he blew a save against the Marlins this week. But, he will be out 6 to 8 weeks so I guess he will not be blowing any saves for them for awhile. Still that is a lot of time to pay the price for his frustration.

True, Strickland's was preventable, but what is it with pitchers these days? This actually happened over a week ago, but Cubs closer Brandon Morrow hurt his back while taking his pants off. The reactions, as expected, were hilarious. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. OMG! A few days ago I posted about Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale being hospitalized for a stomach problem. Today we learned the truth--a belly button ring caused the problem. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Dice-K--remember him?--is back in the news.
Former Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, now playing back in his native Japan, is experiencing pain in his throwing arm thanks to a fan's actions.
From NBCSports.com:
Quote: | (Matsuzaka) was diagnosed with inflammation in his right shoulder after an "overzealous fan" yanked his arm during a fan event in Okinawa, Japan, for the Chunichi Dragons of the Nippon Professional Baseball league. |
It's unfortunate, but it almost makes one wonder if perhaps the "fan" was one of the opposition.
Hoping everything works out well for him sooner rather than later. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Oh, geez! Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly suffered a stiff back while cooking, causing him to miss workouts.
Sheesh!

Oh geez. Even though it is unfortunate these crazy injuries keep happening, it is interesting to read back on it which I was just doing, and seeing how far back the stories go. Some I had forgotten about. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

My gosh, even my Padres have one to add to this thread. First baseman Eric Hosmer hurt himself getting out of the sauna last night and it required stitches on his forehead. At least he did not have to miss any playing time. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa will miss four to six weeks with a broken rib, said to have occurred while he was undergoing a massage.
This follows on the heels (no pun intended) of Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes' incident that took place on his Florida ranch last week. Cespedes, who has been on the IL all season thus far and has been recovering from surgery on both heels, injured his right ankle in what was described as a "violent fall." He suffered multiple fractures when he twisted his ankle in a hole.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | Neither (Mets GM Brodie) Van Wagenen nor others close to Cespedes would comment on the nature of Cespedes’ fall, except to say that it occurred during a non-baseball activity -- not as a result of riding or caring for the horses he owns on that property. When asked if Cespedes was in any way in violation of his contract, Van Wagenen declined comment. |

Oh, no, another celebration injury! Yankees reliever Dellin Betances is lost for the season after tearing his left Achilles tendon--by celebrating a strikeout.
What's ironic is that Betances had made his 2019 debut during Sunday's Yankees game, having just come off the IL for shoulder and lat injuries, only to have his season end abruptly after throwing two strikeouts. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. You'd better believe I'm trying to catch up on all my threads before the season gets underway.
Cubs pitcher Jose Quintana sustained a laceration while washing dishes at home in Miami during the shutdown. The injury necessitated surgery on his left thumb. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Phillies RHP Zack Wheeler hurt a fingernail on his pitching hand last week while putting on his pants.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | Wheeler lost his balance while putting on his jeans Wednesday night, and the nail caught the lip of the belt buckle area and partially lifted off the nail bed, causing blood and soreness. |

I'm not even sure if these "celebratory injuries" count anymore, but Cody looks like he's going to be able to play tonight. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I was just reading back on these last few posts, from last year, because I found something new to add to the thread. It was another celebration injury! Since the Dodgers are playing the Brewers now, I just found out about this yesterday. RHP reliever Devin Williams is going to have surgery on his hand and will miss the postseason. He broke it after punching a wall (it says "drunkenly") last Sunday when the Brewers were celebrating winning their division. It must suck to be him right now! Here's the article. |

Here's what I don't get--why did he do it "out of frustration", when they were celebrating winning a division title? _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. From mets.com:
Quote: | June 2: SS Francisco Lindor out of Mets’ lineup due to injured finger
Late Wednesday night, after the Mets arrived at their hotel in West Hollywood, Lindor accidentally slammed a door on his right middle finger as he attempted to close it. The finger became swollen and filled with blood, causing enough pain that Lindor was unable to start Thursday’s series opener against the Dodgers.
“I ran around the room for like three minutes,” Lindor said. “I didn’t want to look at it.”
A day after the incident, Lindor had a small hole punched in the finger to relieve some of the pressure. He attempted to grip a bat and throw a baseball; the former was easier for him than the latter. The finger was noticeably black and blue. Still, Lindor hopes to miss only one game.
Thursday marked the first time this season that Lindor was out of New York's lineup, in its 53rd game. It came at a relatively inopportune time, as the Mets opened a four-game series against the powerhouse Dodgers with Lindor riding an active 10-game RBI streak.
“It’s frustrating to not be out there with the boys,” Lindor said. “It wasn’t a goal of mine to play 162. I want to be out there every day, do whatever it takes to help the team win, but I’ve never played 162 and I wasn’t saying, ‘I need to play 162.’ I want to play the most games possible.”

Well maybe he can do that again when they get into San Diego, lol.
