I didn't think about it before but since Ryan Weathers made his MLB debut against the Cardinals, last week, former pitcher David Weathers is his father and had a big impact on helping him get to where he is. Article from Union Tribune

This was news to me. I didn't know Manny is the brother-in-law of Yonder Alonso. From the Padres' home page

Yes - it is something I did not know before Manny came here, either.

What a good story about former World Series opponents Al Leiter and Marquis Grissom, with their sons facing off in the Regionals this weekend.

How about the article about family ties in this year's draft - I'm posting here because of the topic.

For the first time in almost 60 years, a battery of brothers was featured in a major league game, and it was the Cubs' Romines who were those brothers--Andrew and Austin of Trabuco Hills.

It wasn't by design, as Chicago was in mop-up mode in the ninth inning of a blow-out loss to the Brewers in Wrigley Field on Thursday. And it was only on that very day that the two brothers were actually, by some twist of fate, on the roster of the same team.

Quote:
Combined, the Romines have played over 1,000 games in the Majors and more than 2,500 professional games between seven organizations. The only time they played on the same team was as Arizona Fall League All-Stars back in 2010...

Austin Romine signed with the Cubs over the offseason to be the backup catcher, but injuries shelved him for most of the season. He was activated from the injured list on Thursday. Andrew joined the fold on a minor league contract and came up after a series of trade deadline moves depleted Chicago's roster.

"I mean, we weren't even sure if we were ever going to be on the same team in the same organization," Andrew Romine said. "Today was a surprise. ... To be able to see him in the dugout was pretty cool."

Andrew Romine said this was the first time he pitched to his brother since their days as high schoolers in California.

And last night at Petco Park, we got to see the Nola brothers face off as the Phillies' Aaron pitched to his brother, Padres catcher Austin. Aaron struck out Austin on three fastballs.

From padres.com:

Quote:
The matchup Saturday was the first ever meeting of the two Nolas as professionals. They’d spent most of their careers in different leagues, with Austin playing for Seattle before he was dealt to the Padres before last August’s trade deadline. When the two teams met earlier this season, Aaron didn’t pitch and Austin was on the injured list with a left knee sprain.

"We thought it might happen early on in the season in Philly, but he was hurt and I [wasn't] pitching,” Aaron said. “... It ended up lining up perfectly. That was pretty fun tonight."

To tell the truth I wish the "other" Nola had gotten the better of his brother!

Though I can say, it is always fun to see brothers match up against each other.

Vlad Jr. has joined his dad in an exclusive club this week--father-son duos who've hit 40 home runs in a season.

The other combo was Prince Fielder and his dad, Cecil Fielder.

Congratulations to Jr.!

I saw where Bradley Zimmer (Indians) homered off his brother Kyle (Royals), today! Here's the article.

The Indians won the game, 8-3, at Progressive Field.

The other 3 times this has happened in MLB history:

Quote:
Oct. 7, 1904: George Stovall (CLE, batter) at Jesse Stovall (DET, pitcher)

July 19, 1933: Rick Ferrell (Red Sox, batter) vs. Wes Ferrell (CLE, pitcher)

May 29, 1975: Joe Niekro (HOU, batter) at Phil Niekro (ATL, pitcher)

And in this World Series, the Snitker family will be assured of a trophy--whether it's Braves manager Brian, or his son Troy, hitting coach for the Asterisks*.

It should be an interesting Thanksgiving.

It's another great story. I love all the family connections in baseball.

I think Troy had the edge tonight.

I should have mentioned it earlier. But this moment was too special to let go without posting, Trevor was at camp last weekend to see his son Wyatt in a Padres uniform for the first time. Yea! I did not realize he went undrafted last spring. Article from padres.com

That's heartwarming, Cathy. Smile I remember when those kids were toddlers and used to sit behind home plate at Qualcomm!

Today is Siblings Day...

It was fun seeing how that worked out! He just barely got to the Padres, and here they are playing his brother's team a few days later.

I liked reading about the Diaz brothers getting saves on the same day - Edwin for the Mets and Alexis for the Reds. Here's the link.

It mentions,

Quote:
The Díaz brothers became the third set of brothers to record a save on the same day, the first since Todd and Tim Worrell did so on June 13, 1997. The only other pair to close down two games in a day was Ravelo and Josias Manzanillo on June 30, 1994.

In today's Tigers-Blue Jays game played in Rogers Centre, Javy Báez homered for Detroit off his brother-in-law, Toronto RHP José Berríos.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
“Javy is more than a player from the other team. He’s family,” Berríos said. “We have to enjoy and celebrate with him, too.”

It’s not just a nod from one Bayamon, Puerto Rico, native to another. They really are family. Though Berríos and Báez aren’t directly related, their wives are sisters. Their families are close.

“Obviously, it's personal with him and the family,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said after the Tigers’ 4-1 loss. “Their holiday dinners will probably revolve around these at-bats. … The game within the game, obviously, but at the end of the day, they won.”

They’d faced each other twice before Sunday -- once when Berríos’ Twins faced Báez’s Cubs in 2020, then when the Blue Jays visited Detroit last month. Not only was Báez 0-for-5 in their meetings, he hadn’t hit a ball out of the infield against his brother-in-law.

I thought it was good to see Ke'Bryan Hayes and his father with the ceremonial first pitch on Sunday in Philadelphia. Ke'Bryan of course plays for the Pirates, but his dad played for the Phillies.
