I saw that this weekend during their Old Timers Day, the Mets retired No. 24 for Willie Mays. He wasn't there for the ceremony but his son did appear to be present for it. I probably shouldn't express an opinion since I'm not a Mets fan but I found this to be kind of odd. He played less than 2 full seasons with the Mets at the end of his career and by then he was far from the great player he used to be. However I will defer to the Mets. They didn't even announce this in advance, they just did it before the game - nice but I guess if I were a fan I might have wanted to plan to be there. I guess from the reception and responses I've heard about, it's been that most fans think this is appropriate for them to do. Any comments?

It almost sounds like something the Padres would do, Lol.

I hesitated at first to post about this but I've recently learned this was a promise made long ago being fulfilled.

I wouldn't do it if it were the Dodgers, but these are the Mets.
