Sorry, now that Clasico Mundial is underway, I'm moving the comments from the first thread over to this one. Smile

Heck of a start to the Classic last night - did not see that coming (Netherlands beating Cuba).

Australia vs. Korea is one I look forward to tonight. Oh and Team USA is playing a warm-up game against the Battery Chuckers. It seems easy to be both for Team USA and against that team from S.F.! Twisted Evil

Well that Team USA game did not go the way we wanted, lol. Good thing it doesn't count.

How about Shotime, Japan over China? Australia beating Korea was exciting too. I didn't watch Team Italy but I was surprised to see Cuba go down again after already losing.

Mexico up on Colorado and USA beating the Angels has me looking forward to this weekend's game!

I'll even include all the "exhibition" games between WBC teams and MLB teams.

Some good pitching so far!

And a few blowouts, too. Sad

Nicaragua over N.Y. NL, 2-0

Minnesota over D.R., 2-1

St. Louis over Nicaragua, 6-4

Venezuela over N.Y. NL, 6-4

San Francisco over USA,

Mexico over Colorado, 11-1

Seattle over Canada, 5-3

Kansas City over Great Britain, 8-1

USA over Anaheim, 6-0

Atlanta over P.R., 9-0

Colombia over Chicago AL, 5-4

Currently being played:

Israel up, 1-0, over Washington in the fifth inning.

And what we're all waiting for...this Saturday, Mexico vs. USA

Very Happy

That was a thriller though I didn't like the final score, Colombia beat Mexico, 5-4, in 10 innings.

Oh, I was so hoping Mexico would win. But in the meantime - U-S-A! U-S-A! That GB team looked pretty good to start off but once the US hitting picked up, that was it. I am happy to see them off to a good start.

Jokes are being made about the GB jerseys - someone mentioned that whoever came up with the "design" (there is none) opened a Word document and slapped Arial font across the front of the jersey. When I looked at them, I thought that was a pretty good way of describing it. Smile

Now, we have Israel beating Nicaragua, 3-1!

Mexico will be fighting for their life in a few hours vs. Team USA. So it's going to have an extra element of intrigue.

The games are being played faster than I can watch, Lol.

Combined perfect game pitch for P.R. over Israel today! 10-0 win. But since it only went 8 innings it will not qualify as a no hitter - otherwise it would be the first. Article from mlb.com

Yeah, my head is spinning, but I love it! Smile This is better "March madness" than basketball! Smile

Team USA bounces back from the beatdown and hands one out to Canada!

Great Britain vs. Mexico in about an hour!

In that Korea rout over China you mentioned, Ha-Seong Kim had a grand slam. Manny has had some highlights in this WBC, too.

Watching USA now - but OMG did anyone see the ending of the PR game? They beat Dominican Republic 5-2, but Mets closer Edwin Diaz was injured in the celebration on the mound! Maybe I should post in the Strange Injuries thread? This looked really, really bad. I hate to see it not just because of the injury but because the negative folks who dislike the WBC will use it as an excuse. OTOH maybe I should just mention him in Thoughts & Prayers! Crying or Very sad

Looked horrible! And sadly, it was so preventable.

Anyway, U-S-A! U-S-A! They advance with a 3-2 win over Colombia! Well played game.

Yeah, and El Culichi didn't look too good, giving up four in the first inning--but the team picked him up. In a 5-4 comeback win, Mexico now advances!

Team USA-Venezuela tonight!

OMG - Trea Turner! Trea!!! I can cheer for him again now that he is not a Dodger anymore Twisted Evil

Team USA got to advance to the semis winning 9-7, thanks to Turner hitting a grand slam after they were down 7-5. Can these games get any more exciting? They get to play Cuba next! And Mexico vs. Japan for the other semi game. I will bring it up now - party at my house for the finals on Tuesday, anyone up for that? I talked to a few neighbors and we are amped for this. When the teams are known that will play for the title then we can plan the menu. Smile

14-2 win for Team USA, what a rout - it looked so bad in the first inning when Adam Wainwright loaded the bases with nobody out! Goldy, Mookie, Nolan all helped take down Cuba. Only 1 spot left is going to be decided tomorrow.

I am more than ready for the next 2 days and would be willing to come down your way for the final game!

Bullpen tonight for Mexico-Japan! Roki Sasaki on the mound.

We know a lot of baseball fans aren't diehard fans like we are, which is why I had to laugh at a couple of these comments. But the following is from The Athletic (to counter the ridiculous arguments of the naysayers):

Quote:
You Should Care About the WBC

The World Baseball Classic should dominate the national conversation. It has everything we could ask for: stacked lineups, raucous in-person crowds and dramatic baseball. So why does it feel like an afterthought?

A few levels:

-The timing is brutal. It goes head-to-head with both the men's and women's NCAA Tournaments, which draw a lot of eyes and attention. It's hard to fit in a baseball game after watching eight straight hours of hoops.

-Also, on that timing: We're still getting warmed up to baseball, you know? The MLB players not participating are just ramping up in spring training, focusing more on rest and health than what happens on the diamond. So are many fans.

-It just doesn't have the clout of, say, the Olympics or World Cup, two other massive events in which stars get to represent their countries.

All that aside, watch a game and it is arresting. Emotions ripple through these contests, which feels weird for March baseball, but here we are. It's cool to see all these mega-talents play on the same team and have it actually mean something, unlike the All-Star Game.

All you really have to do is watch Mike Trout, arguably one of the best players to ever play the sport. Trout has loudly proclaimed how much he's enjoyed this, which is unsurprising, considering how little meaningful baseball he's gotten to play with the Angels.

What can we do? Move the competition to a better spot on the calendar? Probably difficult. Put a monetary prize at the end? Maybe. Midseason break for the event? MLB probably won't allow it.

Maybe Team USA going for back-to-back titles will help. The Americans romped over Cuba, 14-2, in the semifinals after Trea Turner's monster grand slam Saturday helped them edge Venezuela in the quarters. Team USA will face the winner of tonight's game between Mexico and Japan.

OMG, OMG, OMG!

What a semis game between Mexico and Japan! Team MX led for eight innings and Japan won in the bottom of the ninth! I am speechless and breathless!

This sets up the WBC finals for tomorrow night--USA vs. Japan.
