Cathy was there for the Padres-Mariners game yesterday, but today is the first full slate of preseason games in the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Let's hear the report, Cathy. Also what about those new rules throwing everyone off? lol
Dodgers got a 7-6 over the Padres yesterday at Peoria which was the first time the teams saw each other since that horrible night at Petco Park last October. But the big scare was Gavin Lux leaving with an injury - they are thinking torn ACL but we will hear the results today. I shudder to think it but he will most likely be out for the first couple of months of the season. |

I am sorry to hear about Lux.
We had a fabulous trip over for the weekend. Padres lost our first game to the Mariners, 3-2, but went on to win the next day against the White Sox, 6-2.
Those were the 2 games we saw. The big news of the first game, of course was that Manny was called out for the first clock violation of the preseason! We left to come home on Sunday, but while driving were listening to the game and Manny got a rousing ovation on the news of his new contract. El Niño made his debut today! It was against the Battery Chuckers and my boys won the game, 7-5. It has been a very long time since we saw him play for this team - way back at the end of the 2021 season. He walked, stole second, and scored in his first at bat. Those fans booed him of course (since the game was played at Scottsdale) - but he will have to get used to that through this season.
Everyone is excited about the coming season. The feeling we got in Peoria was one like nothing is out of our range. The Manny signing on Sunday took the stress of wondering whether he would opt out after the season. Now we know that will not happen. I have not felt this excited in February since back in 2015 (and you all know how that turned out) _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

As you know by now, it's worse than that--he is lost for the entire season.
Cath, I'm happy you had a good time! I think our Dodgers welcome the challenge--DV was talking on Dodger Talk last night about how it's good for baseball--but again, our team is still Western Division champions until someone else takes it from us. We certainly have more question marks this year than we have in many years. Now there's a new wrinkle with Gavin's injury, which is sad in particular given he's worked so hard this offseason. Shortstop was his job for the taking.
We also have young prospects coming up who have to prove themselves, but they'll be mentored by some quality veterans. And I have to think some of the spillover from the way last season ended is going to be motivating to our team. I can't imagine Doc will let that go without regular reminders. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I feel bad because he worked so hard this offseason. He was really looking forward to getting a shot at short.
On the bright side though - Dustin May and Ryan Pepiot have looked very good! I think our pitching should be a strength this year.
Oh by the way Cathy - how was the wildflower bloom? |

They were lovely! So different from last year at this time. Explosions of color all over Anza Borrego. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

OMG, now they're using outfield shifts! How long before MLB tries to outlaw those? _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I know I saw that too - teams will find a way to have what they think is the best defense even if there are new restrictions.
I guess if we must be no hit it seems best to have that happen during pre season games! The Cubs combined to do that to my Padres yesterday with Justin Steele & 6 relievers - including former Padre Brad Boxberger. The Cubs say they think it was their first ever no hitter in exhibition games but really, does anyone care - Lol - Manny and Nelson Cruz did not look very good, El Niño had the day off along with Juan Soto. Shake it off and move on - now getting ready to play Arizona. After 1 week in, Padres are 4-4 - K.C. at the top of Cactus League (7-1). The best thing to me about these games is seeing things shape up for the regular season. It is a work in progress. Same for all other teams, too. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

Dodgers won that game, and from what I understand, Thor looked pretty good with three perfect innings. That's what we need from him.
El Gato, unfortunately, has sprained an ankle, and may not be ready for Opening Day... ??? _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. It looks like James Outman is likely to make the Opening Day roster, as well as Jason Heyward. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Clayton's first preseason start looked pretty good. I would love to see him have an injury-free season but that sure doesn't seem like it will ever happen, especially as he's almost 35 now. |

How about Steven Duggar, 3-for-3 in yesterday's game. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

We have Ha-Seong Kim and the X-man back now that their WBC runs are over. Rainout today because weather on that side of the desert is like weather over here on this one. Only 2 weeks until tomorrow until Opening day. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

Though we know it means absolutely nothing, it is nice to see the Dodgers coming back strong in the Cactus League after their 1st round playoff series loss in October! They are 12-5 and in first place with a week left. They played the St. Patrick's Day game at Sloan Park against the Cubs and won that, 9-7. In Clayton's second start, against the Rangers a couple of days ago he didn't look so good and Corey Seager homered off him - he tipped his cap.
I am also pleased to see that the Angels are 13-6 and maybe they will have their act together all season this year? For now these are just things to make comments about even though you can't put any real stock in these preseason numbers. |

I should have posted this already, but how about Darren Baker's grand slam off his pop's team? Classic. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. That was too funny, Sunny.
I should have posted this already but El Niño hit his first home run in 2 years in the St. Patrick's Day game against our "roommates" the Mariners. His comment was "I almost forgot how to" - Lol. Article from padres.com
The transition to right field is getting a little more smooth for him even though he has a ways to go to get used to it. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |
