I suppose that St. Patrick's Day is probably the most appropriate time to report that MLB has created a "team greening program." And if you're the environmentally responsible type, you might find this to be of great interest. It may also be a source of pride to some fans on this board that their teams--notably the Mariners, Dodgers and Padres--are progressive leaders in this area.

Yesterday was Earth Day, and the Reds went green in their game against the Dodgers at Great American Ballpark.
Sure wish they'd conserved some of the energy they used banging out all those hits against us...

Today is the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day, and Major League Baseball has taken some bold steps to acknowledge this. Here is a summary of MLB's most recent green efforts.

Happy Earth Day!
Major League Baseball celebrated Earth Day 2011, too.
Only a few examples from the above-linked article from MLB.com follow:

These are just some of the many ways Major League Baseball is recognizing Earth Day on Friday, and, in reality, this is more symbolic of the culture that exists year-round at the 30 ballparks and within the game's workforce. MLB and its clubs are committed to a future that embraces operational efficiency, environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
"Baseball is a social institution with social responsibilities, and caring for the environment is inextricably linked to all aspects of the game," Commissioner Bud Selig said. "Sound environmental practices make sense in every way and protect our natural resources for future generations of baseball fans."
...Led by Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin senator at the time, the first Earth Day was on April 22, 1970 -- the same day Ed Stroud scored in the 18th inning as the Washington Senators beat the Yankees, 2-1. It's safe to say that the environment was not top of mind across the National Pastime on that day. In fact, it was more about new Astroturf replacing grass. Today, the Team Greening Program is a joint focus by MLB, clubs and fans to all get involved.
...The Mariners...will introduce a new environmental mascot to help spread the word about the Mariners and Safeco Field's environmental practices. Kid Compost will join Captain Plastic to help educate fans about the Safeco Zero Waste goals, which have increased the Mariners' recycling rate from 12 percent in 2005 to more than 70 percent in 2010.
...Chase Field's new Solar Pavilion is a stylish structure that generates 75 kilowatts of solar power and provides D-backs fans with extra summer shade. It is a product of a partnership between the club, Maricopa County Stadium District and APS, and the structure covers 17,280 square feet above the plaza area near the ballpark's western entrances and ticket booths.
...The Red Sox actually were the first to install solar thermal panels at their ballpark -- on May 10, 2008. Energy generated from those is used to heat hot water in the park. According to Bonneville Environmental Foundation, the installation helps avoid 18 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Offsetting 18 tons of carbon dioxide is the environmental equivalent of planting 4.86 acres of trees, not driving a car for 43,611 miles or offsetting the carbon dioxide produced through natural gas use from about four average U.S. homes annually.
Speaking of Fenway Park, did you know that more than 800 tons of construction materials generated as part of the right field improvements in 2009 were recycled? Or that in 2010, 96 percent of waste was recycled? Or that this year, 80.91 percent of construction materials were recycled?
It is a familiar theme at every venue across the Majors.
...The Braves recycle as many items as possible throughout all facets of operations, and perhaps the most visible initiative is in the fabric of the gameday staff's shirts: from recycled PET plastic (the plastic that makes Coca-Cola bottles). Sixteen recycled beverage bottles are used to produce the fibers for each shirt; that's more than 65,000 bottles that now have a new life. Recycled bottles were also used to produce new chairs that are being used in the Braves bullpen this season. Each red 111 Navy Chair is made with at least 111 recycled bottles.
Up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, the Twins and Minnesota State Parks and Trails formed a partnership to promote outdoor recreation and continue the Twins' commitment to environmental responsibility. Every time a Twins pitcher breaks the bat of an opposing player during this season, Minnesota State Parks and Trails plant 100 trees in one of the 73 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas or along one of the 21 Minnesota state trails. The 2010 tally: 180 bats broken, 18,000 trees planted.
In that unforgettable charter season for Target Field last year, the U.S. Green Building Council awarded the facility LEED Silver Certification. Did you know that 80 percent of the wood used throughout the ballpark was sourced from sustainable forests? Having collected 36 certification points, the most ever awarded to a ballpark, the Twins call Target Field "the greenest ballpark in America."
...Meanwhile, in the interest of healthy competition within the game, another ballpark with such LEED status says essentially the same thing on its website: "The Giants are committed to making AT&T Park the 'greenest' ballpark in the country by making environmental stewardship a top priority." And one of the coolest examples is at its popular Gilroy Garlic Fries stand on the Promenade Level, Section 119.
The Giants, in partnership with PG&E, Linc Facility Services, Centerplate, Henny Penny and Coca-Cola, turned that into the ballpark's first sustainable stand. This 550-square foot stand was completely retrofitted with Henny Penny Open Fryers, which reduce gas consumption by 32 percent; cut utility cost by more than half and automatically reduce cooking oil consumption by 12 percent. Coca-Cola's Energy Management System Cooler saves up to 35 percent more energy than traditional models. In all, the stands energy efficient appliances save enough energy to fry an additional 110 tons of garlic fries. Some 800 pounds of garlic fries are prepared in this stand per game, and who knew it was contributing more to the environment than that familiar smell? |

Some of these things you just don't think about.

It's very encouraging to read about the creative ways teams are honoring their commitment to the environment.
In addition, two months ago the Dodgers led an offseason caravan event in which they invited fans to help clean up a stretch of banks on the L.A. River in Elysian Valley. As a waterway that flows from a semi-rural area at the west end of the San Fernando Valley, through urban neighborhoods and into a concrete basin in downtown Los Angeles (and past Dodger Stadium), it runs nearly 48 miles in a winding course from Canoga Park to its mouth near the ocean in Long Beach.
Since this project took place in mid-February when some players had not yet reported to camp, it allowed manager Don Mattingly, several current and past Dodgers, and Dodger fans to interact for a good cause.

Last, also in February, the Dodgers participated in a coordinated effort with Heal the Bay to clean up the beach at Santa Monica. While I applaud this, it was rather distressing to learn how much there was that had to be cleaned up.

Outfielder Gabe Kapler's team trashed the competition, collecting 30 pounds of Styrofoam, cigarette butts and other refuse.
...Teresa Evans traveled from the San Fernando Valley to participate in both caravan days. Monday, the team and some volunteers cleaned up an area of the Los Angeles River.

Just looking back here at last year's comments and river clean-up efforts, as well as beach clean-up at Santa Monica...I really liked re-living that. I don't know if any other teams have organized such a fan-interactive project to improve the environment.
On Earth Day yesterday, MLB.com reported about baseball's responsibility to take environmentally-friendly action.
A few highlights from the above-linked article:

The Mariners will once again stage a carbon-neutral game with carbon off-sets, renewable energy credits and water restoration certificates. This is the fifth consecutive year the Mariners have off-set carbon impacts for Earth Day.
...The Royals are on the same page, announcing along with local power company KCP&L this past week that they have a new solar energy partnership at Kauffman Stadium which will result in the largest in-stadium solar array in MLB. A sign of the times, this was a key part of the press release MLB sent out regarding the All-Star Game's community impact in Kansas City this summer.
...The Cardinals added solar panels this year at Busch Stadium, too.
The Pirates launched their greening initiatives program in 2008 -- named "Let's Go Bucs. Let's Go Green." On the eve of Earth Day 2012, the club announced significant progress. The program, which focuses on recycling, conservation and awareness, successfully diverted more than 61 percent of the PNC Park waste materials out of the waste stream in 2011 (it was 27 percent the first year). That figure includes approximately 78.4 tons of glass, 18 tons of aluminum cans, 24.7 tons of plastic, 12.4 tons of paper, 154.7 tons of cardboard, 24 tons of used cooking oil, 59 tons of yard waste and 97 tons of other recyclable materials.
...Miller Park, home of the Brewers since 2001, has received one of the most prestigious honors for facility sustainability and conservation efforts. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced that Miller Park is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified in the category of Existing Building Operations & Maintenance, making it the first stadium with a retractable roof and just the third MLB park overall to receive the designation.
In Colorado, pitcher Jeremy Guthrie is part of the Rockies Games of Green initiative, and he encourages fans to submit entries in his Guthrie Go-Green Classroom Challenge. Elementary, middle and high school classes are invited to present an environmental project they have done (or will do by the May 4 deadline) that will make a positive impact on the environment.
At last season's World Series in St. Louis, Green Teams were all over Busch as a very visible presence with sustainable practices. At the 2011 All-Star Week, "All-Star Green Teams" presented by Pepsi circulated throughout the stadium during all ballpark events to collect recyclables from fans. In addition, 100 new recycling bins were installed at Chase Field for All-Star Week and were to remain there permanently. Food waste and food-soiled paper from the stadium is turned into compost, which can be used as fertilizer for soil and promote plant growth to help increase land and air quality. It was the first time a composting program had been implemented at an MLB All-Star Week and it is estimated that 66 tons of material would be diverted from the landfill through recycling and composting efforts.
MLB's relationship with NRDC led to the creation of the Team Greening Program featuring NRDC Team Greening Advisors, web-based software tools tailored to each club featuring advice and resources for every aspect of operations. This unprecedented program offers specific local advice concerning such topics as energy use, purchasing, concession operations, water use, recycling and transportation.
In 2010, MLB developed software to collect and analyze stadium- operations data. It marked the first time a professional sports league had implemented a software program throughout its league to collect data for the purpose of documenting environmental practices and for sharing information about environmental best practices at stadiums.

Now maybe I can catch up to last month's news!
Major League Baseball participated in the White House sustainability forum in July. It makes me proud of baseball to read these excerpts:

Take stock of your impacts on the Earth and reduce them."
As hosts of the 83rd All-Star Game, the Royals bought carbon offsets certified by the Environmental Protection Agency for emissions from the 120,000 kilowatt-hours of energy used during All-Star Week events. They also purchased credits from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to restore depleted watersheds for the 600,000 gallons of water that were expected to be used amid blistering Midwest heat.
At Kauffman Stadium, 120 solar panels were installed earlier this year and will produce 36,000 kilowatts hours annually. "Green Team" presence was everywhere as recycling containers were placed in offices, suites, concourses and parking lots at the stadium, and environmental awareness was promoted with a public service announcement at The K and in-stadium signage and an ad in the 2012 All-Star Game program.

And again, a reminder from Major League Baseball about environmental stewardship.
I wish the Dodgers were at the forefront like they usually are on issues. I don't see any such evidence of that, though. Hopefully new ownership will start focusing on this issue.

The Dodgers are not playing at home on Earth Day, again, but here's a good read about how Major League Baseball is leading the way in doing its part to help sustain our planet.
And here are the Dodgers' initiatives.

This news is about 2 months old but until now, I had mentioned this yet - my Padres are installing the major leagues' biggest solar project, at Petco Park. I am proud of our team and this city for making this move. Everything should be ready for Opening Day next week! Article from padres.com

Although the Dodgers didn't play that day, Monday was Earth Day, and teams celebrated in many ways around Major League Baseball.
Perhaps among the most interesting was BZ's rendition of the National Anthem, as he returned to his former haunts in Oakland for the Athletics-Rangers game. It was unique in that it was sung without amplification, which was a purposeful effort to save energy.
Of course, this being Oakland, there were few fans there to enjoy this experience, but I certainly think BZ could have put a little more enthusiasm into it. It's not his energy we need to save.
