From time to time, we see the occasional quirkiness of baseball on display in a game. Recently the Tampa Bay Rays have been involved in some wacky plays, and an interesting bit of strategy on the part of their manager, which were discussed in the Rays team thread. There was also the Dodgers win over the Angels a couple of months ago in which they were no-hit, which was covered in the "Ravin' at the Ravine" thread.
So I just wanted to start a thread for those plays that haven't been mentioned on this board yet...and if anyone has any to add, feel free to do so. I've been "collecting" them for a couple of months now, so here goes:
-Dodger outfielder Andre Ethier's five-ball walk by pitcher Joe Blanton, in Sunday night's Dodgers-Phillies game.
-An unusual game ending to a recent Detroit-K.C. match-up:
Quote: | Friday's Tigers win over the Royals was a relative rarity in the Majors, a game that ended with a runner thrown out at home trying to advance on a would-be wild pitch. For the Tigers, however, it's the second time this decade.
According to research from STATS, Inc., it marked just the third time since 1980 that a Major League game ended on a 2-1 (catcher to pitcher) putout. The Tigers were actually involved the last time it occurred, then on the losing end of a 6-5 Yankees win on July 24, 2001 at Yankee Stadium. |
-The odd another "rolling ball", in another game involving the Royals, as they beat Boston earlier this month.
Quote: | It happened in the seventh inning. (Jason) Bay hit a deep fly ball to left center, and Mitch Maier quickly closed in on it. These are his favorite plays. He hasn't spent much time in the big leagues, but Maier's thought plenty about running toward the wall and making that impressive jump for a SportsCenter-worthy catch.
"Those are the plays you dream about," he said, "diving and taking away home runs."
Maier leaped into the wall, and the ball landed right in the palm of his glove. He was so close to making that special catch, but the ball bounced out. As far as he was concerned, Bay had just hit one over the fence.
But he hadn't.
As Maier lay on the grass, the ball rolled on top of the wall for a few seconds in a straight line, hardly moving one way or the other. Maier guessed the wall was a foot wide.
...Gload continued sprinting from left field. He saw it, leaped for the top of the eight-foot fence and instinctively swatted the ball with his left hand into his glove. Bay's home run instead turned into a double.
"It was just a reaction play really," Gload said. "It has nothing to do with my skill level or anything." |
Speaking of the Red Sox, they were involved in another strange play on the Fourth of July en route to a 6-4 win over the Yankees.
Quote: | With two outs, Kevin Youkilis stepped to the plate for Boston and smacked a fly ball deep to left field. Johnny Damon took chase and crashed against the wall to make the grab. The ball could temporarily be seen in his glove before it popped out.
But then it seemed to disappear, and all eyes -- including those of Damon -- searched the outfield before a white object was spotted sitting on top of the left-field wall. |
-Then there was the Houston-San Francisco game a couple of weeks ago which the Astros won, 6-2. They scored six times in the sixth inning with the runs driven in by walks, hit batters, and sacrifice flies--but no hits.
The L.A. Times noted:
Quote: | "It was a crazy inning, but that happens," Astros catcher Humberto Quintero said. "Baseball's just crazy." |

And Anaheim second baseman Sean Rodriguez strikes out on a 4-2 pitch. It happened in the fourth inning of last night's Tigers-Angels game at Comerica Park.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | "It's something that slipped by," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He [home plate umpire Tim Welke] reset the count at 2-2 to 1-2. We missed it. That's embarrassing."
...Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he wasn't aware of it at the time, adding, "That's a new trick of ours." |
The Angels won, anyway, 7-1. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Benjie Molina's 16th home run of the season, hit in last night's Giants win over the Dodgers, brought the strangest results of a call reversal I've ever heard of. Thing is, if they were going to ask for it to be reviewed, it why did they put in a pinch runner before it was reviewed rather than waiting until a decision had been made? |

Not sure how many of you saw this, but one weekend ago during their series in Arizona, the Dodgers were involved in a controversial "fourth out" play. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Well, since 2009 is almost over, I promise I will post some more of the year's strangest plays--but, most likely it will be done tomorrow. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I started this thread a few seasons ago, but haven't kept it current since then as I had said I would.
Check out these quirky incidents from game action yesterday. Weirdness rules.
Also, from a Red Sox-Indians game in Cleveland, Boston catcher Jason Varitek was caught napping as a run scored while he did nothing. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. How do you avoid a sweep when your team is in a scoring slump? You do it the way the Mariners did it, with a little help from the "baseball gods" in their comeback win over the Angels. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Thrown out at first from right field? Yep, that's what happened when Royals RFer Jeff Francouer got "A"s baserunner Michael Taylor for the third out of the second inning in a game played at Oakland last week. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Although I've already posted about one of these occurrences, last Friday was a day full of oddities in baseball. As MLB.com notes, "A week after a notable Friday the 13th, Friday the 20th provided its share of unlikely, quirky plays, as we've already seen two inside-the-park homers and a triple play."

Wow, what an oddity It was great how everyone kept a sense of humor about it and it was funny to read about Morse running the bases backwards _________________ "If you had a son it would be a great thing for him to grow up to be just like Gil Hodges" -Pee Wee Reese (Brooklyn Dodgers) |

This one's a couple of weeks old, but still a good one:
Speedy Blue Jay outfielder Rajai Davis rounds the bases on a hard ground ball hit back to the box, in a game in which Toronto beat Boston at Rogers Centre. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. The most uncommon of home runs was hit by Mike Moustakas in last night's Royals-Indians game; you can see it here.
And the umpire was asleep at the wheel the night before as the Cardinals were facing the Rays; check out St. Louis hitter Jon Jay's at-bat. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Had to dig back to last season to find this thread, but it was worth a bump because of this oddity:
-The Angels lost to the Jints in San Francisco today with the last out coming on a ball in play hitting the baserunner.
-Just hours later, in Los Angeles, the Diamondbacks lost to the Dodgers with the game ending in the same way--the final out coming on a a ball in play hitting the baserunner.
Prior to tonight, an MLB game had not ended this way in five years. Then, it happens twice on the same day, with both games involving Socal teams?
Vin had been discussing the Angels' hard-luck loss this afternoon throughout the Dodgers' evening broadcast, and could barely believe the same circumstances would end the game being played before him.
I mean, really...what are the odds?

And now, a full count = a walk? Rangers pitcher Yovani Gallardo's pitch was hit twice by Diamondbacks batter Jake Lamb, who broke his bat admidst this oddity.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | In the fifth inning Tuesday night, Rangers right-hander Yovani Gallardo ran a cut fastball in on Lamb's hands, and the ball hit right on the label of the bat, causing the bat to break. As the barrel of the bat flew forward through the air, it struck the ball a second time.
Assistant hitting coach Mark Grace, a veteran of 16 years in the big leagues, said he'd never seen that happen before.
Diamondbacks General Manager Dave Stewart, who pitched for 16 years in the majors, shook his head when he saw the replay and also said he couldn't remember seeing that before.
Lamb was not aware that he hit the ball twice until people who had watched it on super-slow motion began telling him about it. |

In an alternate universe, first baseman pitches to pitcher--and yes, that's an AL pitcher--in today's Orioles blowout of the Athletics.
There was also confusion on the basepaths when the Diamondbacks walked off with a win over the Reds last week. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game.
