We saw it after we got home early last evening. I agree, with Dick & Vin gone it will be the end of a great era of broadcasting. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

Now that there is a definite number it sure does make it seem closer. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

I know how sad it must be to not have him calling playoff games! Last night's ceremony was so sweet! Will post more later--I'm on borrowed time.

Man Linda, we saw that replayed later after we got home from the game. You were so lucky to have had him for so long! It has got to be very hard, though! All those tributes were so beautiful and then him giving back to the fans, must have been so special to be there! _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

I wish I could have been there for the finale. As it was, I'm grateful I was there for the first two.
Now, Congress has passed a resolution honoring Vin. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Oh my gosh Linda, we watched a lot of that last day and the Giants really did something good for a change! I was even getting teary so I can only imagine how you were feeling! It was quite a send off for him from baseball, but I am just not sure about that comment (rooting for them against the Mets, Lol). Not sure I will take a side in that one. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

I'm looking back at when I started this thread several years ago, thinking at that time about Vin's mortality while marveling at his longevity. At the time, I think I almost expected that he would be calling Dodger games right up to (the D-word).
So while I named the thread, "Timeless Excellence", it appears that no matter how timeless it seemed as the years passed, that era--which we were blessed with for almost seven decades--is no longer timeless.
And with that, I thank Vincent Edward Scully from the bottom of my deep blue heart. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Tears were just streaming down my face as I watched Vin's last broadcasts with my family - he is so beloved and not just by Dodger fans, either! I don't know how I will feel next year when we have every game called without him. I already have kind of an empty feeling about that!
Thank you for all the articles and comments so I could follow along with the tributes he deserved so much. |

Vin is making one last East Coast road trip! To the White House!
He's receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Obama next Tuesday!

He seemed so humbled - I believe I saw tears in his eyes. I feel so fortunate I was able to see Face the Nation yesterday when Vinnie was on! While at my brother's house this weekend I got to see the presidential medal ceremony. What a group of people! He is the shining star of them all! |

Set the DVR and watched it when I got home from church.
All the more reminder we're still celebrating Vin for good reason!
And happy birthday to him; he turned 89 yesterday! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

And it turns out Vin Scully Way is not enough--there is now a proposal to name a freeway after Vinnie. In keeping with the title of this thread, the announcement this week that the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry will archive one of Vin's broadcasts proves that his work really will be timeless.
From CBS LA:
Quote: | The selections for the 2016 registry were called as “aural treasures worthy of preservation†because of their “cultural, artistic, and historical importance to American society and the nation’s audio heritage.†|
As always, congratulations, Vinnie! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Us, too! It seems everyone just wants to keep hanging on to these moments we won't have anymore. It's all we can do to just cling tight to the memories of such great calls and great stories. |

I think we're destined to live in tears at every tribute to him. I loved seeing the way the crowd gave him a huge ovation no matter who they were, with many diverse personalities. I think he is the only one who can unify Dodgers & Jints fans, or fans of all sports. |
