Expectations are big for San Diego State junior RHP Stephen Strasburg, who has been named the preseason National Collegiate Player of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. Whether the 20-year old San Diego native can live up to them will be fun to track this season. Sunnyblue and I have talked about catching him at an Aztecs game (if our hectic schedules will actually allow for coordination when he's pitching!). SDSU is offering six-pack packages of games he is scheduled to start, for a mere $24 (can't beat that!). Details are here.

Congratulations, Stephen!

Last post of the night and then it's off to bed for me. I was going to save this for later, but I am still so pumped up I wanted to post now.

I was at the SDSU game vs. Utah the other night, and Stephen was clocked at 102! That's unreal! And they got that reading seven times! The article you posted gives some very good examples as to why the buzz about him is so strong. He also had 16 Ks in seven innings! There were at least 20 major league scouts in attendance and some were left just shaking their heads.

Will it be tonight, Sunny? Stephen takes on the BYU Cougars.

Just an FYI to everyone else, so many people are coming out to see him pitch that SDSU has had to add ticket windows on nights he pitches to accommodate the demand. And it's not just locals who are interested. My neighbor who was at last week's Aztecs win over UNLV in which Stephen pitched met several out-of-state visitors who were curious about the young fireballer.

According to last Saturday's San Diego Union-Tribune:

Quote:
The Strasburg Phenomenon gathered momentum last night in SDSU's 4-3 Mountain West Conference victory over UNLV.

...The fans saw Strasburg (4-0) strike out 14 in seven innings while allowing two runs, six hits and one walk.

That's what those who were in their seats for the first pitch saw, anyway.

Dozens of fans were still in line to purchase tickets as Strasburg flashed one pitch at 101 mph and struck out the side in the first inning.

More than 100 people were still in line as Strasburg struck out the side again in the second inning.

The line finally dwindled down by the time Strasburg took the mound in the third.

The Aztecs (9-6, 1-0 MWC) had a 4-0 lead by then, the runs coming on RBI singles by Brandon Meredith and T.J. Thomas in the first inning and Erik Castro's solo homer in the second.

UNLV tried some stall tactics at times, more to disrupt Strasburg than accommodate those stuck outside.

“I know I'm going to get that a lot this year,” said Strasburg. “They're going to try to get in my head and slow the game down. . . . It's not going to bother me.”

Can't wait to see him in action again!

I'll have to call you later and let you know. I've got a lot of running around to do but I'll see if we can work it out. I'm looking forward to a game too. One of my co-workers said he must be really slacking off. He's down to only 14 Ks a game! lol

Don't stress about missing it. He left the game leading after pitching seven solid innings, then SDSU's bullpen blew it. Aztecs lost, 4-2. Stephen struck out 15 and surrendered two hits. He struck out the side three times that night.

The buzz is out there, though. There's something special over on Montezuma Mesa. Catch him now before Scott Boras Evil or Very Mad fully takes control.

Harpo and I were talking about that the other night. Since Boras is only his "advisor" for the time being, Harpo was saying the kid could make a push to play in San Diego, contact the Padres directly about his interest, and then use Boras as a bargaining chip. In other words, he could tell the Padres they have exclusive rights to negotiate with him to work something out, and inform them that if that doesn't work, he'll drag the Devil in. That perhaps could give S.D. an advantage even if it appears right now that they can't afford him (and that certainly looks to be the case). I'm a Strasburg fan, but I'm also a Dodger fan--so I don't want him in the NL West unless it's playing for us!

Stephen was his usual self on the big stage the other day, pitching vs. UC Davis at Petco Park in an afternoon game preceding the Padres-Angels exhibition game. Six shutout innings...ho-hum. Aztecs won big, 14-0. Even some of the Padres and Angels players were watching with great interest!

Stephen Strasburg is a freak of nature. It is that simple. I've seen some pretty good young pitchers come out of San Diego in recent years--Mark Prior, Cole Hamels, etc.--but Strassy is #1.

He's Baseball America's mid-season collegiate player of 2009--not surprising, given he was the preseason player of the year and has lived up to the hype.

Last Friday, the Aztecs rolled into New Mexico and Stephen took it to Los Lobos of UNM. The temps were in the low 40s during the night game, but as Glen Rosales' article in the San Diego Union-Tribune described it, "Strasburg's heat leads SDSU out of the cold."

Quote:
On an evening when snowfall left the nearby foothills dusted white, San Diego State ace Stephen Strasburg still unlimbered fastballs in the upper 90s and threw off-speed pitches that dipped into the low 80s.

Despite the weather, which included chilly rain throughout much of the Mountain West Conference series opener, Strasburg had plenty in his arsenal to lead the Aztecs to a 1-0 victory over host New Mexico last night. Strasburg (8-0) allowed seven hits, striking out 14 while walking one in his first complete game of the season. Of his 129 pitches, 91 were strikes.

“I thought this was his best effort of the season,” SDSU coach Tony Gwynn said. “I thought he really mixed his pitches well. He made the pitches he needed to make. It was the most pitches he's thrown all year, but he was strong and he wanted to come out for the ninth.”

...“The cold makes it tougher, but I've pitched in cold weather before at Air Force, Utah and TCU,” (Strasburg) said. “The thing is I was able to keep my team in the game.”

His next start will be a huge test. It's a home game against #16-ranked TCU this weekend. If anyone gets to him--he is, after all, human--it may be this team. But I'm hoping not.

His stats for the season to date: 8-0 record, 1.28 ERA, 63 1/3 innings, 40 hits, 10 runs, 9 earned runs, 12 walks, 121 strikeouts.

121 Ks in 63 innings is incredible.

As you know I was there for that game a couple of weeks ago and I look forward to seeing him coming up this week. Some scouts were saying they have never seen any one pitcher so dominant at this level.

It blows your mind to think about it. Even some of the announcers on Extra Innings are bringing him up and he is getting the attention of many around the Majors.

A sold-out Schott Stadium in Santa Clara, CA was site of Friday night's SDSU-SCU game, the latest scheduled start by Stephen. He is 10-0 now on the season.

From the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Quote:
SANTA CLARA – The Stephen Strasburg circus came to Santa Clara last night and it didn't disappoint. Before a stadium-record crowd, Strasburg struck out 12 Santa Clara Broncos in eight innings of three-hit ball as San Diego State picked up a 5-0 victory.

Count the Broncos impressed with the 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander who is expected to go first in next month's draft.

“I haven't seen anything like him in the college game,” Santa Clara coach Mark O'Brien said. “In fact, I don't think I've seen anything like him in the big league level. We've seen him three years in a row and that slider that he throws, that's a lethal pitch. That's as good a combination as you're going to see at any level.”

Said right fielder Kevin Madden: “That's the best pitcher we'll probably face in our lives. His fastball is as fast as it gets and his breaking ball just drops off the table.”

Strasburg needed just 104 pitches to make it through eight.

...Several radar guns were pointed at him all night – reportedly, he hit 100 miles per hour on a pitch in the fourth inning. Aztecs coach Tony Gwynn, who knows a thing or two about media attention, has been trying to keep things under control for his 20-year-old standout.

“I tried to explain to him that it comes with the territory,” Gwynn said.

I don't know how much better it gets than this...or how much worse my timing could be.

In his final home start of the 2009 season, the awesome, amazing, every-superlative-imagined Stephen Strasburg, threw a no-hitter vs. Air Force, behind a loud and raucous crowd at Tony Gwynn Stadium. His fastball was clocked at 101 in the third inning.

The news even made it onto MLB.com's top headlines.

The 20-year-old SDSU right-hander walked two, while striking out 17, en route to a 5-0 Aztecs win.

It was a wonderful early birthday gift for his head coach, Tony Gwynn, who turned 49 on Saturday--and a very special pre-Mother's Day gift for Stephen's mom, Kathleen Swett.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
For the season, Strasburg is 11-0 with a 1.24 ERA. He's struck out 164 against just 17 walks in 87 1/3 innings while yielding just 48 hits. He's reached double digits in strikeouts in 11 of his 12 starts, and he's never walked more than two in one outing.

Now, my personal story. Knowing this would be his last home start, I planned a couple of weeks ago to attend the game, which I knew would easily be a sellout, as his starts have been going back to February. A friend of mine ordered a ticket for me on-line as part of a group.

However, due to car trouble toward the end of the week and increasing frustration with some other personal issues, I realized it would be more trouble getting to the SDSU campus than I realized, and would create a time management problem as well, with having to work late to meet a deadline. Rather than scramble to arrange transportation and arrive after the game started, I told my friend to just let someone else have the ticket.

Meanwhile, after finishing my special project at work, getting my car back, and heading out to a happy hour, I received a text message from Tony, Nurse Cozmo's boyfriend, asking if I was at the game. I said no and explained the circumstances. Hey, I've seen the great Strassy pitch several times this season and last, as well as during his West Hills High days. Missing one more game won't be a big deal, even if it does have the additional emotional factor of it being his last home game and the chance at an unbeaten season. Right?

Wrong. Exclamation

I'm mad I didn't make more of an effort, but I'm happy for Stephen, Tony, and everyone connected with what is going down as perhaps the greatest college pitching career ever.

I'm just glad I got to witness some small part of the excitement on Montezuma Mesa. Smile

And I hope the kid's star (and right arm), doesn't burn out early, as hard as he throws.

Today I'm going out to lunch with Sunnyblue and her brother, who was at the game, to a special lunch honoring Stephen at San Diego State. Sunny is coming down to meet me shortly and we'll drive over to SDSU together.

Meanwhile, major props to Stephen, who some are now speculating may be the best ever. That puts him in some mighty fine company, with a lot of Hall of Famers. Will he live up to the hype? One thing I know, he's got his head on straight, and I'm hoping Justin will be inspired by him.

Full article from MLB.com is here.

Justin's doing great. I keep saying one day I will post about him again, and that will have to be soon.

The lunch was great, but I still haven't posted about the luncheon event I went to last Tuesday. I've been working on that, too.

Stephen may have made his final collegiate start last night. Whether that is the case depends on whether his team can rally from a first-round loss to Virginia on Friday in the regional NCAA baseball tournament.

He threw a great game, but was out-pitched by Virginia starter Robert Morey, who limited the Aztecs to five hits over six shutout innings.

Facing the Cavaliers in the first round of the Irvine regional playoffs, Strasburg struck out 15 over seven innings and walked none. However, he exited the game losing, 2-0, in what was eventually a 5-1 setback for SDSU.

As noted in the San Diego Union-Tribune:

Quote:
It was the first loss for Strasburg since a 1-0 defeat to Utah in the 2008 Mountain West Conference Tournament.

That previous loss took place one year ago last week.

With a win over UNM last week in his last regularly scheduled start, Strasburg completed the season at 13-0, 1.32 ERA, 102 innings pitched, 60 hits, 15 runs, 14 earned runs, 19 walks, 180 strikeouts.

Prior to the start of play this weekend, this regional was considered to the toughest field of any in the U.S. It featured not only the nation's top pitcher, but two of the top ten ranked teams (UC Irvine, as the host, finished the season at #1, and Virginia at #7), and the defending College World Series champion, Fresno State.

In fact, it's kind of eerie. Earlier this season, I had been sharing information about Strasburg on-line with some Washington Nationals fans who were inquiring about what I'd observed at games he's pitched which I have attended.

At that time, I wrote:

"Whether or not Strasburg will win a game he's scheduled to start is about as likely as whether his hometown of San Diego will enjoy beautiful weather on that particular day. On second thought, perhaps Strasburg is more of a lock. San Diego's had a few cloudy days this spring."

Well, Friday was the first gray and gloomy day we've had here in months. This morning I awoke to a light drizzle as I set out on my morning hike, perhaps reflecting San Diego State's hopes to advance.

Like Strassy, the Chamber of Commerce probably knows that "you can't win 'em all", either.

I will post more updates about the weekend tournaments a little later.

I think we can all agree we've seen something awesome this year, and I feel very lucky to have gotten to witness this. I think we should all give a big "congratulations" to Stephen on a great year. Gwynn may have to replace him but he won't really ever be replaced.

Agreed--very proud of our homeboy. Big props to Stephen and best wishes on a great professional career!

Also, Stephen has been named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the best player in college baseball. The award will be presented in St. Louis. Cardinals fans, if it's Stephen, I want you guys to look out for him for me!

Interesting that one of the other four finalists is also a pitcher from San Diego, Mike Leake (who continues in the postseason with Arizona State).

Right, I never heard from any of our posters who were at the All-Star festivities about this. I've been meaning to post ever since then, but just never had time with all the games, visiting guests, and other activities I've been involved in. In fact, there have been a lot of topics I've been meaning to post about over the past month.

However, one of the guys who was out here for the Cardinals' series over the last couple of weeks did tell me a few things about it. He got his autograph, and was impressed with the modesty and level-headedness he showed--in particular, "for a Boras client", he added.

What a phenomenal year for Stephen! Winning the Golden Spikes Award was just the icing on the cake.

He signed with the Nats about two minutes before the deadline on August 17. Washington fans snapped up 6,000 tickets just to see Stephen's news conference at Nationals Park.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
(Pitching coach Steve) McCatty wonders, however, how much coaching he will have to do with Strasburg. McCatty has seen video of Strasburg and believes he is polished.

"How much coaching are you going to do, because he looks really good. He has tremendous talent. We are all excited," McCatty said.

McCatty would give two pieces of advice to Strasburg when he reaches the big leagues one day: be yourself on the mound and be willing to learn.

And:

Quote:
It was more than talent that impressed the Nationals. According to Lerner, they loved Strasburg the person.

"What has impressed me the most is how he has handled the fame at such a young age -- he showed a lot of maturity," Lerner said. "We saw a lot of that when we had our lunch with him in California. We all walked away saying, 'That's a young man with a good head on his shoulders.' That's very impressive to me."

I think a lot of that attitude can be attributed to working with Coach Gwynn.

Now, let's see him pitch. My prediction is the Nats will have a big fan favorite, for more reasons than one.

Nice Christmas gift from Stephen to SDSU--a donation of $141,000.

From MLB.com (linked article published in mid-December):

Quote:
Strasburg, who was the top pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, as a sensation at San Diego State where he posted a 12-1 record and a 1.32 ERA with 195 strikeouts in 109 innings as a junior last season. For his efforts, he was the recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy and Golden Spikes Award as the nation's top collegiate player.

The money donated by Strasburg will allow the school to upgrade the surface of Tony Gwynn Stadium with new synthetic turf replacing the grass skirting from dugouts to baselines.

"SDSU baseball and the university have meant so much for my development" Strasburg said in a statement. "As a student-athlete, I knew that it takes more than just coaching and good players to be successful. From academic advisors to athletic trainers to the donors of the program, it takes all to make a successful program. I am proud to become part of the base of donors that want this program to succeed. As I have stated before, I am an Aztec for life."

Strasburg will be honored at halftime ceremony of San Diego State's basketball game against Arizona on Saturday night.

I didn't hear about this, myself, until someone sent me the link. I think I was working too much last month. With the holiday rush over it's been nice the last week and a half. Thanks for posting this though. It is good to see him give a nod to his roots.

Congratulations to Stephen! He married long-time girlfriend Rachel Lackey--to my knowledge no relation to John--right here under our noses in S.D. on January 9, but not even the Union-Tribune reported it. Instead, I just learned about it via the Washington Post and MLB.com.

Best wishes to the newlyweds.

I hadn't heard about this either. We knew he was engaged and my son had said he knew it would be happening sometime before pitchers and catchers reported. They must have kept it pretty quiet.

Well, as everyone here knows from the excitement he generated during spring training, Stephen is beginning to show he's the real deal.

How exciting it was to see his debut in the minor leagues, in perhaps the most heralded start for the Harrisburg Senators at the Altoona Curve on April 11. And he did not disappoint! He surrendered one earned run on four hits and notched the victory for Harrisburg--in front of a sellout crowd and over 70 members of the media. He struck out eight over his five-inning performance, with his fastball averaging 98 MPH. Not to mention the game was shown live nationally on ESPNews!

Since then he has breezed along in his next two outings. And so the question remains, how long will it be before the call-up comes?

How about did any of you see last night's start. I saw bits and pieces of it. 5 innings, no hits allowed.

Yes, he just keeps rolling along! And he's only 21!!! And he's lowered his ERA to 0.52! What an amazing performance against Reading.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
He threw 64 pitches, 48 for strikes, and even singled home the lone run in Harrisburg's 1-0 victory with a base hit up the middle in the fifth inning.

...That kind of arm doesn't come around very often," said Phillies closer Brad Lidge, who threw two innings in a rehab appearance for Reading. "It's not very often you see a guy be able to throw that hard with that kind of command of his offspeed pitches."

And just when it seemed there's nothing more he could do, Strasburg drove in the game's only run off of Reading starter Michael Cisco. It's Strasburg's second career RBI.

"I was just really happy to hit the ball," Strasburg said.

That's more than any of Reading's batters could say.
