Thanks for that update, Sunny; you beat me to it.
From yesterday's start:
As for whether he will pitch in the majors this season, I say yes. I don't think they want to put it off any longer than a year after surgery to have him face major league batters again. That's standard for pitchers even if it's late in the season. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I heard Stephen did not do so well in his next start last night. He gave up 5 runs. But he said the adversity was good for him, and I kind of have to agree. He will have many challenges once he gets back to the Majors. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

True--seems like he has the right outlook after a frustrating outing.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | The right-hander needed 49 pitches to get through 1 2/3 innings in his third rehab start since last September's Tommy John surgery, allowing five earned runs on four hits and two walks. He ended his day with a strikeout after starting it with a walk and three consecutive RBI hits against the Lexington Legends of the Astros' farm system.
Strasburg threw 29 of 49 pitches for strikes and was pleased with his command. He wasn't missing his spots, he said, he was just throwing to the wrong spots -- a little high.
"A lot of it has to do with knowing how I need to pitch in the big leagues and staying with that," Strasburg said. "Unfortunately, it's not necessarily going to work at this level, because the approaches are so much different from guys you face in the big leagues. The bottom line is, if I throw fastballs just a hair up like I did today, they're going to be hit a country mile anywhere."
But Strasburg's fastballs were as fast as ever -- consistently between 96 and 99 mph -- an encouraging sign after he was told velocity would not return until about 18 months after surgery.
But he lost command of his breaking balls between starts, and he plans to adjust his mechanics before taking the mound on Monday -- likely in Hagerstown again. |

He's coming!
After two more solid rehab starts--one a very dominating performance--Stephen is now scheduled to make his long-awaited return to the majors. And who will the first team he faces be?
Well, yes--the Dodgers! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Haha, very funny; and I was just nice to you about rooting for your Padres this week!
Well, today is the big day, and the two big questions are 1) how effective Stephen will be, and 2) if he gets the chance to be--or, if instead bad weather in D.C. postpones the game.
As today's L.A. Times notes:
Quote: | ...outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr., whose father coached Strasburg at San Diego State....said he and Strasburg worked out together at their alma mater last winter.
"You wouldn't even have known he was hurt unless he told you," Gwynn said. "He's a pretty even-keel dude. He doesn't get too up or down."
When Strasburg was at San Diego State, Gwynn used to visit the Aztecs in the off-season to face live pitching. He recalled how Strasburg made a marked improvement after losing significant weight in his freshman year.
"I swung, but I didn't hit anything," Gwynn said. "Nobody gave me a heads up where he was at that point."
By that, Gwynn meant that Strasburg was learning how to pitch rather than simply throw.
And as Strasburg grew older, his velocity continued to climb. He struck out 92 batters in 68 innings last season, compiling a 5-3 record and 2.91 earned-run average in 12 starts. |
Reminds me of being there at SDSU last January for the Strasburg 5K! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Stephen pitched great tonight! But the Dodgers were able to rally on their bullpen, yea! |

Yep, and that's exactly the way I predicted it! I said the best case scenario would be Stephen doing well, but the Dodgers winning. I knew he was on a strict pitch count, and all they had to do was get into the bullpen to have a chance. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Steve McCatty is pleased with Stephen's return performance.
From MLB.com, McCatty noted:
Quote: | "He is a special individual." |
Note: This is for you, GilHodgesFan (well, for others, as well, if they're interested in participating): while listening to the Nationals broadcast the other night, I learned of an intern in D.C. who is writing a paper and soliciting input from fans on their justification for players they feel should be in the Hall of Fame but are not. You can do so via a link on this site, which will take you directly to the form. Make sure to do it now, though, because it will no longer be accepted after Sunday!
Stephen vs. Dodgers:
He will face Houston this weekend.

That sounded like a good opportunity to give input. I bet Gil Hodges fan liked doing that because she is pretty loyal to the cause.
To get this thread back to Stephen, he did okay in his next start too this weekend, but didn't go as long and was still on a strict pitch count. He got good support from the Nationals, though. |

I missed putting in a good word for Gil Hodges because I didn't get on the computer for any length of time before we left except to leave a quick birthday message for my sister-in-law Saturday morning. Thanks for letting me know about it though. I hope we can find out who all was represented as being Hall worthy. I sure hate it that I missed out on sticking up for Gil Hodges
Still waiting to hear who is going to be on the Vets Committee this Fall so I can begin my letter writing campaign for Gil. It sure would be nice to get him in there while his wife is still here as she has worked so hard to get him in. _________________ "If you had a son it would be a great thing for him to grow up to be just like Gil Hodges" -Pee Wee Reese (Brooklyn Dodgers) |

Oh, no, that's why I posted on Friday morning a plea specifically for everyone to check back on the board later that same day... I made sure it was at the top by that afternoon so you would see it, too, before you left for St. Louis. I wanted the other travelers to see it too with a three-day advance notice since I knew everyone else besides me was going out of town!
Would have updated everything Thursday night, but things got a bit crazy; will post more later (I'm at work now). _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I had to search for this thread as long as it was since it was last posted in!
Happy quarter-century birthday to Stephen! He turned 25 on Saturday! Born in San Diego, California on July 20, 1988.
Linda, I know your Dodgers just played the Nationals but I did not know if anything was mentioned during that time. Just wanted to post my own wish from his hometown fans! _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

Good call! Yes, he pitched the day before his birthday (got a no-decision) but it was mentioned, and he was certainly born in a special year! Orel Hershiser was National League Cy Young Award winner in 1988.
On a side note, since you mentioned one-quarter of a century, my mom turned three-quarters of a century old two days before that. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Dug up an old thread after the last one we had about Stephen's woes over the last couple of seasons. This time I wanted to post that he now owns the Nationals' franchise strikeouts record. Way to go, congratulations! Congratulations! I'm glad you mentioned it. It's been a long haul for Stephen what with his injuries, etc. I like that Dusty realizes what a professional he is. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Has anyone noticed Stephen has had a great start to the season and might finally be finding his groove? It would be great if he stays injury free. |

Yes, and while it's said that he developed a slider which has been contributing to his success--Stephen denies it. But whatever he's doing, something new is working.
Looking back at this thread, I realized it has 80 posts now since it started in 2009! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. In retrospective, here's a recap of the five-year plan that the Nationals put in place for Stephen. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Stephen was extended last week, and continues to roll, although he got a no-decision in that game. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. The thing that really surprises me is they would give him that long a contract with what his injury history has been like. They have not even had a super season out of him although we know he has the stuff to.
And the other thing about this is, I was kind of hoping he would be available in the offseason for us to pick up. But never mind, I am sure my Padres will be waiting for the last couple of years of his career, like they will with Cole, when they can get the least out of them but they will pitch back here "where it all started." Another quality start for Stephen today against the Marlins, and his sixth win of the season. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Stephen has beaten the Mets for the second time within a week. His record is now 8-0. It is nice to see him healthy and doing well, until of course he pitches against my team! I think this is the season they have been expecting from him for awhile now. He really is looking like a first overall pick, even though it took 6 years. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |

Believe me, I never predicted this thread would become so active this season! Perhaps Stephen will have a chance to pitch in the ASG in his hometown! With a win over the Phillies today, Stephen became the first pitcher in the majors to the 10-win mark this season--against zero losses. It was a rocky start as he gave up four runs early, but his team bailed him out and he threw seven innings, retiring the last 14 batters he faced. Seven years later, it's great to see him finally coming into his own!
Overall, I don't mind him being second to Clayton, though. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
