Tony LaRussa's neighbor just down the road from his home in Alamo, CA, is Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, whom everyone knows as the hero of the Hudson River landing of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 a couple of weeks back. (I figured that proximity out by talking to one of my high school friends who lives in Danville, and is four miles away from LaRussa in the next town over.)

Sullenberger, along with his crew, will be honored during pre-game festivities of today's Super Bowl game.

But, here's some fun stuff. A columnist for the Contra Costa Times made some suggestions drawing on Sully's strengths and nominated him for a few positions in the world of sports. Gotta love some of these. Smile

Just a couple of examples:

Quote:
At age 57, Sully can swap stories with another middle-aged fella across the Bay Bridge. Yep, he and new Giants pitcher Randy Johnson can compare what it's like to hit a bird while working (re: Johnson's fastball into an unlucky dove in spring training in 2001).

# Splash-hit home runs into McCovey Cove should now be known as a "Sully."

# For the "A"s to start their season right, they have no choice but for Sully to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day. Even if it's a low pitch, it'll land safely, according to the scouting report.

And more...

I'm out of here now; catch you all later.

Those are good ones! I was glad they honored the crew. I bet if we think awhile we could come up with some other suggestions for him.
