I haven't done very well since the second half of the season got underway in keeping up with several players' health issues. I may be posting some updates on those soon.
More recently, Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer was hospitalized because of a blood infection just prior to Thanksgiving. He had undergone a sports hernia surgery in early October. Get well, Jamie. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Blue Jays third baseman Edwin Encarnacion suffered facial injuries from an errant firecracker on New Year's Eve--shot off by his brother during a celebration in the D.R.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | Encarnacion said one of his brothers lit a firecracker that was supposed to go up but instead it went sideways and struck Encarnacion in the face. He went to a local clinic in the Dominican Republic on Friday but he was later transported to Miami, where he saw a face specialist for his injuries. |
Sounds like it is a minor injury--glad he was able to avoid serious damage. Best wishes to him. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Best wishes to Dodgers coach Larry Bowa, who was briefly hospitalized yesterday with stomach cramps.
From MLB.com:
Quote: | Interim manager Don Mattingly hadn't thought of the situation as serious, commenting that Bowa "felt pain during the whole game" before finally leaving.
"He's probably just trying to get out of the Tucson trip," Mattingly joked following the Dodgers' 3-2 loss to the Reds, referring to the team's 120-mile bus trip for Saturday's game against the D-backs. |

Quote: | Vin Scully admitted to hospital after hitting head
March 18, 2010 | 11:52 pm
Longtime Dodgers play-by-play announcer Vin Scully was admitted to a hospital Thursday night after falling out of bed and hitting his head, said Josh Rawitch, the Dodgers' vice president of communications.
Scully was taken from his Hidden Hills home to West Hills Hospital and Medical Center for precautionary reasons and will stay overnight for observation.
Rawitch said the Dodgers expect him to re-join the team in Glendale, Ariz., at Camelback Ranch this weekend for Sunday's telecast between the Dodgers and Cleveland Indians.
Scully is entering his 61st season as the Dodgers’ broadcaster. He is scheduled to broadcast all of the Dodgers’ home games, as well as their road games against National League West and American League West opponents.

Since last night not even a single other post about this?
Fortunately, Vin was released late this morning and apologized to everyone for causing any concern.
This article from USA Today sums it up quite well, I think. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Cari, I am guessing when she was asking where all the Dodger fans were it was about why they weren't posting get well wishes to Vinnie. I for one was without Internet access while at Camelback. It created quite a stir over in Arizona when people heard this. Fortunately it was a very short stay for him in the hospital & only for observation but even still, a scary thought for us all. Our family sent a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to the press box for Vin's first game and return to the booth for the first time this year. We are all saying prayers for you Vin! |

Props to your family for doing that, Sunny! Very sweet.
From the L.A. Times:
Quote: | Pitcher Jeff Weaver spoke for the Dodgers faithful Friday when he said of Vin Scully: "That's outstanding news."
The news was that the Dodgers' Hall of Fame broadcaster had returned home Friday morning after spending the night in a hospital following a fall at his Hidden Hills home.
Scully, 82, rose from bed too quickly Thursday night and fell and hit his head, prompting the hospital visit as a precaution, the Dodgers said.
He returned home Friday morning and made plans to travel to Arizona for the telecast of Sunday's Cactus League game between the Dodgers and Cleveland Indians.
Weaver, who grew up in Ventura County listening to Scully, said, "To see that he had a speedy recovery and he's going to be back this weekend to televise a game is something Dodgers fans are definitely looking forward to. He's the voice of the franchise."
Dodgers Manager Joe Torre said Friday night that he spoke with Scully earlier in the day and "he's fine. He sounded perfectly normal."
"I guess he's had a cold and jumped up quickly or something and got a little dizzy," Torre said.
Scully issued a statement of thanks "to everyone for their thoughts and prayers, and I apologize for any concern that I caused. Most importantly, I'm looking forward to Sunday's game, my first of the Spring."
Inducted into the broadcaster's wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., in 1982, Scully is starting his 61st season as a Dodgers broadcaster. He is scheduled to broadcast the Dodgers' home games and their road games against teams in the West divisions of both leagues. |

Yes, I was just making an offhanded comment because on some of the baseball boards my husband visits, Dodger fans were coming on board to post just because of that. I think a lot of them were panicking, not to make light of the situation but fortunately Vin is OK. I know Dodger fans are proud to have him and fans of other teams all around baseball can really appreciate him, too. I also agree it was a nice gesture from your family, Sunnyblue. I'm sure that brightened his day. |

Well, they are both eighty-somethings, but a similar incident just happened with Padres broadcaster Jerry Coleman, who was hospitalized following a fall yesterday before the Padres-Rockies game in Denver.
From padres.com:
Quote: | Coleman said he hasn't had any previous incidents like the one he had Saturday. He was able to laugh about it before the game.
"The cement cracked from where my head hit it," he said. |
Best wishes to the Colonel!
Also, what a sad story, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Quote: | MINNEAPOLIS — After batting practice this morning [April 3] at Target Field, the St. Louis Cardinals were notified that pitcher P.J. Walters’ infant daughter, born several weeks premature, died last night. The team released a statement expressing “heart-felt condolences.”
Annabelle Faith Walters was born Feb. 10, about 14 weeks premature. She had several health complications related to her premature birth, and Walters was back and forth from spring training to be with his wife Brittney and daughter throughout spring training. Walters once left camp so that he could be present when his newborn daughter underwent surgery.
General manager John Mozeliak notified the clubhouse this morning about the Walters’ loss.
P.J. Walters made his major-league debut last season, and this year he’ll be a member of the Class AAA Memphis rotation. Walters was optioned out of spring training on April 1. The team gave him the time he needed during spring training to be away from the ballpark and with his family. |

Now another of Pearl Girl's favorites is enduring a hardship. Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt's family home in Mississippi has been severely damaged by a tornado this weekend. Fortunately, there were no injuries.
Also, Pirates pitcher (and Damien High alum) Chris Jakubauskus was hit on the ear by a line drive off the bat of Lance Berkman during Saturday's Pirates-Astros game in Houston. Jakubauskus was subsequently hospitalized overnight, then released. It had been his first major league start in 2010 after being called up from Triple A on Friday. Last time I saw something that scary was in Arizona last September when it happened to Hi-Ku. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Roy Oswalt's family home, in Weir, Mississippi, was totally destroyed by the killer tornado that tore through Mississippi. His mom was the only one home, with her dog, but they survived. Those in Weir were spared and are all alive, many others died, including three children, He and his wife, Nicole, drove home to help with the clean-up. It is the home where Roy grew up, and they have little left, but his mom was safe, which is more important. Please keep all the people in this area in your prayers.

Luckily I was not at that game. What I saw was so upsetting, I had to turn the TV off, and could not even watch for the remainder of the day. I honestly thought I had seen someone killed on the mound. Amazingly enough and through the Grace of God, Jakubauskus sustained no serious injury. Lance Berkman was was so shaken by the accident he said later he could not even concentrate the remainder of the game. Lance later visited him in the hospital. _________________ It breaks your heart. I know, that would have been sickening to be there for, live. Jus watching it on replay it reminded me of that Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks game DB mentioned too. The same thing happened, his wife saw it and thought he was killed. The article she posted does talk about how shaken Berkman was. It seems it would be so hard to be in that situation. They're so competitive but then in the end, they are just human beings. |

Lance is just a big ole soft pussycat with not a mean bone in his body. When Lance got to first base he grabbed his head in his hands and looked like he was going to have a break down.
Did you see when Tex tackled the catcher of the Angels, picked up his helmet, touch homeplate and not give a second look or thought to see if he had injured the catcher? Ever since Tex left the Rangers his head has gotten bigger and bigger. I think the Angels catcher ended up with a concussion and maybe even a broken bone. _________________ It breaks your heart. DODGERBLUE6:
I had no idea you had moved my post to this thread. When I log on, I do not always have time to read every post since the last time I posted.
I am so so sorry I posted it again. But like I said, since I could not find it (I looked under titles) I assumed I had not hit the "submit" button and had not really posted it. I did not re-post it to intentionally be rude or try to take over the board or use up space. I sincerely apologize for re-posting it. I suspect I should not post until I have sufficient time to read everything that has been posted since I posted last. But since I have work and family responsibilities coming out of my ears (as do all) will mostly now be a reader, since I just simply won't have time to read every thing in between visits. Again, I apologize for re-posting the same thread again. I sincerely regret my error. _________________ It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart.

Hey, Pearl Girl, don't worry--of course I know you were not doing it to get under my skin, LOL--you are not that kind of person! I only posted back because I didn't want to delete it again and have you wonder if you were going crazy. Post when you can...read when you can. I understand about us all having responsibilities. You'll remember I was not around much myself during the week of the Dodgers' home opener because taking time off really set me back at work. You will probably also notice I post a LOT of things long after the fact--items that are "old news." I get around to it when I carve out a few minutes here or there. I suspect with all of us attending games these days, there is less time to get on the board on a regular basis.
FYI, I should make it clear that I never "delete" without moving the same comments to the thread where the discussion is taking place. Maybe this is getting a bit off topic, but I have known moderators of other boards that use the "delete" key too freely, in my opinion.
P.S. I'm really sorry for Roy's family's loss! Just glad they are all safe.
Edit: And while I'm at it with this thread open, let me add my best wishes to Brewers broadcaster Bob Uecker, who underwent heart surgery yesterday. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game.
