Thanks for updating this, Linda.

I was so glad to hear Mike Trout was doing fine.

A week for the Angels - not only Mike Trout & his accident, but now it was Matt Shoemaker getting hit in the head by a line drive in the game in Seattle yesterday. He had to have emergency surgery. Article from angels.com

Best wishes to Matt.

That was a lot scarier than I initially thought it would be.

Wishing Matt a speedy recovery.

Kurt Suzuki required stitches last week.

Linda feel free to adjust this post & others too, if you wish. I know I sometimes have trouble with adding the links.

Blue Jays pitcher Francisco Liriano was hit in the head and neck by a line drive in the eighth inning of yesterday's Toronto-Texas game. I did not see the game, but details from MLB.com are as follows:

Quote:
Liriano walked off the field under his own power, but upon reaching the clubhouse, an ambulance was called to take him to a local hospital to undergo further examination. Medical personnel used a stretcher to move Liriano from the clubhouse to the ambulance.

The scary incident happened when Carlos Gomez hit a 102-MPH liner up the middle. The ball struck Liriano and ricocheted into center field, but the veteran lefty remained on his feet and even went to back up third base.

Toronto manager John Gibbons and head trainer George Poulis immediately ran onto the field at the conclusion of the play.

"He got hit somewhere back in here," Gibbons said while grabbing the back of his head and neck area. "I couldn't tell you exactly where. So he's just going for some further tests. Any time you get a head injury, you have to get it looked at. So that's about the extent of it right now."

Gomez was visibly shaken after the game because of the incident. He called Liriano his "best friend," and he said he texted his fellow countryman (both are from the Dominican Republic) but had yet to hear back. Gomez, like everyone else, was waiting for more updates on Liriano's condition.

"It was so scary," Gomez said. "You don't want anybody to get hit that close to the face. It was scary. You don't want to hurt anybody."

Liriano has been cleared to fly back to Toronto with his team. Best wishes for his continued recovery.

Former Padres pitcher Randy Jones has throat cancer. It is said it is directly linked to his chewing days, and I hate to think about this after we have lost TG.

Our family wishes him all the best! RJ's place in Padres history is special - and he is a great ambassador for our team.

Sadly, cancer has returned/spread for Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis, and he will undergo chemotherapy.

Also, Blue Jays reliever T.J. House was hit in the face by a line drive during an exhibition game against the Tigers in Grapefruit League play today. Fortunately, he's expected to make a full recovery. Best wishes to him.

Update on Chad Bible from the Union-Tribune. I know it's an overused word, but the Aztec OFer has just really got to be an inspiration to his teammates.

Former Dodger Pedro Guerrero has suffered a stroke in the D.R., and is reported to be doing very poorly. I'm praying and wishing the best to the 1981 World Series co-MVP.

Okay, ladies, this is just horrible.

From the L.A. Times:

"High School Baseball Player 'Beaten Beyond Recognition' in Alleyway Assault"

A March 30 attack left Evan Jimenez, a 15-year-old San Pedro High School pitcher, with several facial fractures.

by Matt Hamilton

A 15-year-old student from San Pedro remained hospitalized Sunday with severe injuries after two men beat him while he was walking home, authorities said.

The student, identified as Evan Jimenez, was attacked at about 10 p.m. Thursday in an alley near 2nd and Bandini streets in San Pedro, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A freshman baseball player at San Pedro High School, Jimenez and his team had defeated Gardena High School earlier that day.

Jimenez had left a friend’s house and was walking home when the two attackers struck him with a glass liquor bottle, stepped on him and left him “brutally beaten beyond recognition,” according to a summary of the account posted on GoFundMe.

Authorities told the Daily Breeze newspaper the attackers tried to choke Jimenez.

An unknown person found Jimenez unconscious in the alley, put him into a truck and took him to the Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital in San Pedro, sheriff’s Lt. Tony Del Pinto said. He has since been transferred to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in serious condition, officials said.

The GoFundMe campaign, which was launched by friends and family to help cover Jimenez’s medical expenses, said he was “fighting for his life” in the hospital’s intensive care unit. As of late Sunday, more than $44,000 had been raised.

It’s unclear what motivated the attack. Authorities did not provide a description of the assailants, and Del Pinto said the investigation is ongoing.

“He's a great kid with an infectious personality,” San Pedro head baseball coach Steve Tedesco told the Daily Breeze. “We liked his baseball talent and his character. He works extremely hard at the game and in the classroom. We're all praying for him.”

Crying or Very sad

All the strength and power to you, kid. You're going to need it!

Not to be overlooked (though I'm surprised Cathy didn't already post about it!), Jints manager Bruce Bochy is back in the dugout after undergoing a heart procedure earlier this week. Best wishes, Boch.

It just wouldn't be the same without Bochy in the mix when our guys go to S.F. this week!

The story about Evan Jimenez is horrible! The Daily Breeze ran an article about his mother thanking the community for its support. It is encouraging to know the Dodgers and Yasiel have been good to their family. Here is the link

Best wishes to this young man.

My prayers go out to this boy! It is a very sad story but hopefully he makes it with a full recovery.

Yes, thanks for the post about Boch. I am glad he was not out too long.

Update from the L.A. Times:

"He Spent Weeks in Hospital After Being Beaten by Aspiring Gang Members, Police say. Now he's home."

by James Queally

A teenage baseball player who was brutally beaten in what police have described as a gang initiation in San Pedro last month has been released from the hospital, a family friend said.

Evan Jimenez, 15, suffered brain swelling and a broken jaw after two men confronted him in a San Pedro alleyway, according to police. The assailants smashed a liquor bottle against Evan’s head and proceeded to pummel him, investigators said.

The teen was heavily sedated and remained unconscious for several days after the attack, but he was finally released from the hospital on April 22, according to Tammy Meyers, a family friend who has been helping raise funds to pay Evan’s medical bills.

“He’s moving forward every day. Always has a smile on his face, so hopefully, it just progresses more and more,” she said.

Evan does not remember the assault, according to Meyers, who said he was first informed of the attack while recuperating in the hospital last week.

“He was in complete shock,” Meyers said. “He couldn’t believe it.”

Earlier this month, investigators said they believed Evan had been jumped by two men trying to earn membership in the Rancho San Pedro street gang. The alleyway where Evan was beaten is lined with the gang’s graffiti.

Evan, a freshman at San Pedro High School who pitches for the junior varsity team, had been walking a friend home shortly before the attack.

“Wrong place. Wrong time,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Ricky Osburn said earlier this month. “He has no criminal history. We’ve had no contact with him. Just seems like a good, normal teenage kid.”

Calls to the sheriff’s Lomita Station, which is investigating the case, and to a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department seeking updates were not immediately returned.

Meyers said that although the family is thrilled to have the teen home, Evan is still suffering from short-term memory loss and struggling to walk because of his myriad injuries.

“He’s got a long, long road,” she said.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Continued prayers, kid!
That is very good news! It is sad he has a long road ahead of him, though.
And Randy Jones is cancer free! We are so happy for him!
