Hello, I wondered what you all have planned for the holidays coming up here? I have 3 days off next week but will work a couple of days in the middle. We just got off work awhile ago, until Tuesday, after a very busy holiday season here, with some events for both Christmas and Hanukkah.
On Saturday we plan to go to some friends home in Rancho Peñasquitos and then will attend church at night. Sunday morning, we will be back at church for our regular service, and then meet the rest of the family in Old Town for brunch. Later that day, we'll gather for El Jimador (a family tradition), tamales and Christmas music at our home.
With the time off I have coming up I plan to perhaps meet up with those of you who live nearby, so maybe we can arrange one of those days if you gals are around? My husband and I were considering going to California Adventure with our sons and their significant others, or possibly over to Laughlin sometime during the week. It is still up in the air but that's OK.
I am just curious about other people's plans and how you all celebrate.

Hey Cathy, I have two days off coming up, and am also putting some work in wrapping up year-end loose ends. Sunday worship happens 52 weeks a year, so I'll be preparing publications for that.
I'm possibly going to the Holiday Bowl game (friends may have an extra ticket), and next weekend will be putting finishing touches on one or more of the floats at the construction site in Arcadia. I'll let everyone know which one(s) so you can all watch on TV for them!
Today, Christmas Eve, I'm making one last trip to the Farmer's Market in the morning. We'll go to Kerry's in Mira Mesa for hors d'ouevres and drinks in the afternoon, and then to church in the early evening. On Sunday morning, I'll be back at church again, and after that is probably left open because of recent changes in some family traditions.
I am also planning to get back into a regular exercise routine (beginning tomorrow!) as I've been only semi-regular during the last three weeks, and eating and drinking more than usual has not only necessitated it, but taken time away from it. I'm pretty good about it most of the year because I enjoy getting out and walking and/or hiking so much.
Then, once I'm back inside again, I will make a list of tasks I need to complete in the offseason and start whittling away at that. I have some reading to catch up on that I don't get to during regular season, and some projects around the house that I've put off all spring and summer because baseball takes up so much of my time. The clock will be ticking! 
Additionally, I am planning some fun threads to post in this forum while news is slow in January. Look for those coming up before college ball gets underway.
I'm going to try and get out to both the San Diego Zoo and Sea World. If you don't go to Laughlin, and are available around the middle of the week, perhaps we can all meet up at Quail Gardens and enjoy the setting.
We are not going to my uncle's in Palm Springs this year for our post-Christmas get-together, as he's out of town himself. I had hoped we could all have a family trip up the Palm Springs Tramway, which I consider to be one of Socal's best secrets! Speaking of Palm Springs, my uncle has received not one, not two, but three copies of the new Dodgers book "From Coast to Coast" which will be available to the general public closer to the regular season. Right now several of his clients have extras as they are multiple seat season ticket holders. So he gave them to me. One I am keeping, another I am giving as a gift, and I'm offering the third one up for grabs. I believe Sunnyblue already has one via her brother, but she can let me know if she needs the extra one I have, or GilHodgesFan can. First come, first served!
I'm not sure, but I don't think I'll be getting back to Pasadena for the Rose Parade. That's undetermined at this time. Some of you might remember the garden wedding at church I was involved in on New Year's Day this year. It was beautiful and well-attended, but the timing was just not good for all of us. LOL
As for regular Christmas traditions I love every year, which have already taken place:
-Las Posadas, such a meaningful annual event for me. I always attend at least one around town, no matter how busy I am.
-Parade of Lights on San Diego Harbor...what a beautiful show; in my opinion only Newport Beach rivals ours!
-Christmas caroling to our homebound members at church, which I mentioned in another thread--one of our long-time members will turn 100 years old on December 26, so I may get out and visit her. She is still as sharp as a tack. December is a big month for birthdays not only here on Diamonds, but in our church as well. Three ladies of UCC have hit some big numbers this month--92 and 98, and now 100.
-Las luminarias have been placed and are ready for the Holy Family's arrival. I had to wait because we had a little overnight rain earlier this week, but the path is illuminated now!
-Getting the champurrado ready--we've had some real champurrado nights lately, wouldn't you say? Although none like I'm sure Stlred and GilHodgesFan are having.
Have fun in PQ, Old Town, and at DCA.
As for Christmas brunch, I checked out one of the Christmas brunch menus with jalapeno dressing and turkey with mole. Sounds muy sabroso. 
Save some Jimador for me!

Well I guess we 3 are the only ones celebrating holidays here! 
To Cathy, I hope you had a great time and I understand you're a busy lady this week!
To DB, the caroling sounds wonderful, I'm sure the elderly members really do appreciate that.

You know I love the Parade of Lights as well & our whole family gets out to see it most years. We went to Las Posadas in Old Town this year too.
One local event I think is kind of overrated is the Del Mar Holiday Festival.
I had cleaned all the sand from the beach out of my car and used it for las luminarias myself! Glad to see it was recycled for a good cause The kids helped put theirs out as well, as mine at home.
I do wish I could have gotten out to the Holiday Bowl and I hope you're enjoying that. As you already know I'm off tomorrow but I've worked the first 3 days this week. We (Danny & I) will be camping in Anza Borrego overnight with friends. Danny has the whole week off and took his niece and nephew snowboarding at Mountain High.
Christmas was a lovely day full of fun and sharing. Aaron really enjoyed reading your Christmas letter. We went to church both on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. I also showed them your article about your grandmother. I think that reminded us all of our abuelas who are now gone but yours was really so touching - I think you should get it published.

Boy I should say so! Champurrado went fast here. I was glad the weather had warmed up the last couple of days.
For New Year's Eve we are trying to see if we can get the whole family out to Knott's Berry Farm. When do you go for float decorating? |

Well I see the usual suspects are here, lol.
First, I'm really disappointed neither Stlred or Gil Hodges Fan have participated here, as I already know what you two both do, lol. I was trying to involve everyone during a slow time for the board and I noticed even though both of them were posting several times in the middle of the week, somehow this one was not.
But I did like reading the other 2 posts. Also, I'm glad we local posters were all able to get together for the New Year's Eve baseball game, because what better way to celebrate and send off the year of 2011 - and I look forward to my first baseball game of 2012 too.
I know most of us were trabajar como burros this week!

Yes I do recall that.
Our luminarias are beautiful too, if I don't say so myself, and we will keep them up through Epiphany along with the rest of the decorations. It hasn't rained and they still look so nice. Our trees were producing nicely this month and we were able to package up some fruit baskets for elderly friends and shut-ins and get out to deliver them. That was one thing I really do enjoy is sharing our produce and something that reminds me of being a child and helping my parents pick tangerines and avocados for fruit baskets.

Gosh, Sunnyblue I did laugh while reading that! I was glad to see you put it to good use. I am also happy to know your camping trip went well. We must have really crossed paths! My husband and I made the quick trip over to Laughlin and had a lot of fun even though it was just brief. Joining up with the rest of the family at DCA and Disneyland earlier, meant I had to work today, but I didn't mind, because we had so much fun. I had forgotten how beautiful Main Street at Disneyland is during Christmas season! The weather was spectacular for being outdoors and enjoying the rides and sights. I know you have both updated me today on what all went on, but please post here what your most recent activities were. For 3 gals who worked a good part of the week, I think we got a lot done with family and friends during those few days.
I must say too that my daughter-in-law made the most wonderful albondigas for our Christmas night meal, too. I have saved some Jimador for you both. Maybe we need to send some Abuelita to Gil Hodges Fan & Sltred for coming month or so!
I agree, we too enjoyed Linda's Christmas letter which was well written and fun to share with others. She gets a lot of interesting news into a letter. The piece about her grandmother made me tear up! Wonderful memories for her I'm sure!
My husband and I have gotten back on our regular fitness routine too, and went out running along Mission Beach before I went to work this morning. That's something we had not done together in about 20 years!
Knott's Berry Farm on New Year's Eve sounds fun! Stop for dinner at Mrs. Knott's first. We have had some great ways to spend N.Y. Eve over the years. One was taking the entire family to the drive in theater quite a few years ago! Then the other which many people have done, is spend the night on the sidewalks of Colorado Blvd. which is just like a miles-long outdoor party and worth doing once if not more times in your life!
Tonight, I will be going home soon, and then will stay in for a quieter evening. Some neighbors will join us for the last couple of hours. A happy new year to you all & be safe!

Happy New Year all the Diamonds ladies! Thanks to Linda for letting me use a computer so I can post today. I am looking forward to the BBQ this afternoon before we head to Pasadena. Knott's Berry Farm was awesome! A wonderful way to spend the evening and very family oriented. The kids loved it.
Camping was so fun with our friends, and we stopped by Mt. Laguna while going through the mountain range for a little out of the way trip up Sunrise Highway and enjoyed some hot chocolate at the cafe.
Was being a cochina the rest of the time that I wasn't traveling or working, so I have to do something about that, I'm afraid.

Sounds good and we may need to borrow some of it for Pasadena, lol. Abuelita, that is. I will be glad to take the Jimador though.

Yes, you are right, Sunny, I did mean Azusa. Oops!  And I didn't get up there at all, even though I know several in your family did. Since you didn't mention it....CHINA AIRLINES. It was a possibility for me right up until the whale watching opportunity came up, so I held off saying anything about it until after Saturday was over. Now, have fun with your next "camping" sleepover tonight.

That was strange. I know GilHodgesFan mentioned she usually gets her tree early, because that was just after Thanksgiving.
As for the book, my copies have not arrived yet as my uncle was out of state, which is why we didn't go up to our regular get-together with him. I would have imagined GilHodgesFan would have wanted it, as it's got a lot about Gil in it! Maybe she already has a copy. I did not hear from her.
Also, of the activities I ended up participating in this week, one of them definitely reminded me of her. I went with a coworker to the last week of Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo for a couple of hours on Friday afternoon, and we ran across an entire family, about 7 or 8 people, with Iowa Hawkeyes Tshirts on, from senior citizens right on down to the year-old or so baby!
As you noted, Cathy, the weather has been spectacular; no better word can describe it. Yesterday, we went whale watching for three hours and saw a lot of them! December was a great month for sightings, so this watching season has been excellent so far. Many visiting Holiday Bowl and Rose Bowl fans were on board. Fun day with such perfect weather for being out on the ocean!

Thoroughly enjoyed the New Year's Eve baseball game, too. I was glad it was a late afternoon event.
Another Christmas-related comment--for the first time, I bought a succulent wreath. Anyone ever had one? I had two wreaths this season, because I always must have a mountain pine one for the scent. But the succulent was quite beautiful, too. This might become a new tradition.

Aw, shucks. That article about her was written from the bottom of my heart and I've enjoyed sharing it with everyone. Reading back on it, it just made me feel warm inside with gratitude that I was able to live through it.

Even stay-cations don't last long enough for me to enjoy them beyond a couple of days, but I will really look forward to using some of my Worldmark credits I was given, so maybe in, say, February...I'll hit the resort in Oceanside? We'll see.

Worldmark sounds good.
Yesterday morning the festivities were so cool as usual! For my youngest niece it was her first time sleeping over.
It was not just China Airlines but also La Cañada Flintridge, too. The kids had the time of their life! They were able to show off to their friends how their work is seen all over the world.

That's nice. I'm going to, can you believe it, three Epiphany parties.
Sunday night, I'm on the take-down crew to remove decorations at church. I'll put everything away at home that afternoon.
I hope you'll share what's going on in your life here, soon. I don't feel it's my story to tell, but I'm sure others would be interested.

Well, not much to tell here since it is just the 3 of us, and you both already know about my accident. I don't want to turn this thread into pity for me though. Let's get back to making this about the holidays.
We will be taking our decorations down on Sunday. We love the story of the Magi and as a little girl I anxiously awaited Epiphany but nothing was to be touched before then. The Nativity scene will then be packed away with the rest of it all.
Sunnyblue - tell the kids their work was great! Loved seeing all those details, close up, myself.

I bet she loved it! What a ritual we used to have when I was a kid. You know, we so enjoy seeing the horses from here, Scripps Miramar Saddlebreds. That is a long time tradition.

They are world-famous, and I'm proud of them, too.
While we are on the subject, I have to say December Nights in Balboa Park is the best thing going on, or at least right on a par with the Parade of Lights as being uniquely "San Diego" type holiday events.
Ice skating on Coronado is pretty sweet, too.
And one other one none of us mentioned is the Ocean Beach Christmas Parade. So off-beat and so much like OB!
I will see if I can get some pics up soon.
For now, this one will have to do.

Thanks Linda. I do appreciate it. Thanks for posting the picture, too. That's one of the things we intended to get out and do this Advent season but didn't get around to. We love the Crown City!
Sunnyblue I would love to see more of the details too. I wonder if Stlred noticed there was one glaring omission this year? Most likely she did!
I do notice now that Gil Hodges fan is back on the board she did not say whether she watched it or not.
While talking about this weekend has anyone heard about the Tres Reyes event going on at San Diego Mission? We've been to one of them before. Anyone here going? I would be if I was up to it. I'll bet you are going Linda. You always seem to make it out to those.

Actually, that wasn't one of the three I was invited to but I did read about it, and would like to go. Too many conflicts as far as time goes.

I noticed that too! I wondered if the Cardinals would be featured at all given they had won the World Series.
Anyway, the staff at the preschool which is operated by our church invited me over for their Tres Reyes party yesterday afternoon, since the preschool director will be off today. Muy sabroso! That was a nice little mid-afternoon break. Better enjoy it while I can, I guess. It's going to get busy at work again very soon.

I know you were going to Panchita's but how was the Rosca de reyes? My hubby brought me home some. Sooooo good! Sad to say but the season is now officially over. I hope we can get some more pictures up here.

You were at Panchita's? ~ Wish I could have had some but we had some good ones up here in North County too.
Not many champurrado nights here lately. I have really enjoyed this week. Swami's was really happening on Friday - everyone was out riding!

Thanks. I will be taking a 6 month leave of absence from work and will post more about the details later.
Cathy I am so glad you're okay and it was a minor accident! But even then I know you've been stuck at home without a car. I hope you get that worked out soon.

I thought about that - I think it's usually just Anheuser Busch.
I wanted to say I also agree about December Nights being a great showcase for Balboa Park around the holiday season but I do have to throw in my few cents worth about it being too commercialized compared to what it used to be. I do still love it anyway!
Gil Hodges fan - I removed the link. It doesn't work anymore.

Wasn't it gorgeous! Wish I could have been out more during the day. Panchita's was swamped when I was there.
I attended my parties and then church on Sunday...now, down comes the Navideno--already done at home, now being done at church. At our post-service "Coffee Chat" yesterday, we had lots of left over rosca de reyes...it went pretty fast!
As for December Nights--yes, it is way too commercialized now, but I guess that's to cover the costs since they would have to shut down otherwise.
And about the Christmas letter, yes, GilHodgesFan and Stlred were both sent copies. I've not heard from either of them about it.
P.S. If you put away the decorations, does that mean the sand goes back into the car? LOL

Don't put away the champurrado yet Sunnyblue! I was almost ready for some last night.
We have had a lot of mimosa left over from New Year's Eve so I have really enjoyed it while at home. The other night my daughter-in-law brought over some of the best pozole I have had. I would recommend her in a heartbeat and I think given my line of work she might do pretty well with some of our smaller events.
So how were your 3 Magos parties Linda? One for each of the reyes, right?
Now, Sunnyblue I do not want to see you selling Chicletas at the crossing, so please do post more about your plans when you can.

I just noticed the yellow basepath on this General Discussion and Chat Room forum. I have missed posts on this part of the forum since before the end of December!!!!!! This was why I didn't see DB's post about the Dodger book that she was wondering why I didn't respond to. It would have been a great book to add to my Dodger collection - darn I didn't get an email notice for new posts to this forum and I seldom get on this one unless I see a reference in the other forum that someone had a birthday or something.
I am soooo sorry to everyone for missing this forum and I am sorry to DB for seeming to have ignore her very nice offering of the Dodger book
In response to the posts on this forum - I didn't do nearly as much as any of you did. I went to Christmas Eve services with my husband at his church. He had to work days Christmas Eve day and Christmas day so I went to my brother's house for awhile Christmas day and dinner (the brother lives about 30 minutes away). In the afternoon when my husband got home from work we went to the movie "War Horse". It was a good movie but it seemed strange to go to a movie on Christmas day
Going camping, to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm also strange because the weather here in Iowa, while it's been unusually nice and warm (40's and 50's), is not condusive to doing any of those things. Our parks and amusement parks are all closed for the winter. And to think of sand in a car. Sand here here in Iowa in the winter means sanding the slippery icy roads or sidewalks. Not anything fun like it does out there. If there was sand in a car here in Iowa in the winter it would be because of the conditions I just mentioned
I too enjoyed Linda's Christmas letter. Her feelings about her grandmother are ones I can certainly relate to as I was really missing my mom this Christmas. I had some of her ornaments on my tree and a memorial ornament for her. Having to check on her house every few days and seeing no lit Christmas tree in the window or her usual Christmas decorations, and not smelling the luscious scents of her Christmas baking when I walked in the door was heartbreaking. I hope the house sells soon. Not just so I can come to California but because it is hard emotionally to keep going over there.
I don't know what champurrado, Abuelita, and Jimador are but if you all like them then I am sure they are good Please let me know what they are. I am interested to find out. You all teach me so much - not only about baseball but other things too that I am just not aware of here in Iowa
New Years Eve I kept my grand-daughter overnight. My grandson stayed at the other grandmother's house. I was in bed asleep around 11:00 CST.
Again, I am sooo very sorry I missed this forum. I hope you all will forgive me. I know how it must have seemed like I was ignoring you. I am not off to a very good start when I have promised to be more diligent
As I've stated before, you have all put up with so much from me last year and have been so patient and understanding. I will check on this forum as well as the other baseball talk forum daily if I can so I will not miss anything else.
You have been wonderful baseball friends and I look forward to meeting you this summer. I just hope I can start making plans soon
Thank you DB for the offer of the book. It is one I would have liked to have and I would have responded if I'd have thought to look at this forum. Thank you for your understanding of personal matters. I'm glad we met on FB and I look forward to meeting you this summer. It is nice to have someone to share my love of Gil Hodges with and of course the Bums of Brooklyn and LA

Forloveofthegame - thank you for your encouraging, very understanding emails and for helping me try to figure out my problems on this site. Why it is so confusing to me at times I don't understand. I get so exasperated with myself It is always great to read your posts about your Padres I hope you are on the mend and things get back to normal soon for you.
Stlred - perhaps you had the same problem I did - not realizing there were posts on this particular forum. Keep your chin up about your Cardinals. As with the Dodgers there are some good players to keep an eye on this coming season. Hopefully someday we can meet up also at a Cardinals game
You all are a great bunch of pals and mean a lot to me.

LOL--I thought you were just planning to come back to this thread, and never did.
It's still confusing to me, though, how you could miss it--what I don't understand is why you skipped over this thread when you were in the OT forum, back when you posted on Christmas Day in the Birthdays thread. I thought it was odd at the time, but figured you were just busy that day and would get back to this thread in a few days. You'll notice you did post on the morning of 12/25 in Birthdays, but I had offered the book to you here, one day earlier (on 12/24). So I figured, well, she's already been in the OT forum so she is certainly aware of the offer and if she wants it, she will speak up.
So, I'm not sure what happened there, since this thread about the Holidays would have been at the top back then.
Thanks for letting us know how your holidays went.

Awww...so sad. But thanks for sharing that. Perhaps it will not be as difficult next Christmas as it's hard to see traditions fade away because the person is no longer with us.

I never thought about it that way; interesting! One was actually delayed until this coming weekend. That's our staff party for work.
Please, feel free to send your daughter-in-law this way! You are making my mouth water every time you mention her specialties.
I am getting some of the photos linked soon so I can post them. I don't think there's anything quite as comparable to Socal in the wintertime with its drastically different landscapes--the diversity is never more noticeable than it is at this time of year.
Did anyone notice how beautiful the Navy ships were all lit up for the holidays, too?

Reading back on these posts again I wanted to comment on DB's post about seeing some Hawkeye fans at the San Diego zoo. They must have decided to add a vacation on to seeing the Insight Bowl. Hawkeye fans are always great about heading to bowl games. I am sure they all like to get away from Iowa winters for awhile as well That would be the bigger draw for me, not the football game
I don't know how I missed the Holiday posts. The diamond did not show up in yellow (that I noticed anyway) next to General Discussions and sometimes yellow diamonds don't show up for new posts.
You have had to hear this time and time again but I will sincerely attempt not to miss anything this year. I will check both forums. I should have paid attention to the date. That would have let me know there were recent posts in General Discussion.
I didn't watch much TV over the holidays except for the Insight Bowl and I missed the last part of it. I didn't even watch my usual Christmas movies. I couldn't watch "It's A Wonderful Life" because it would make me miss mom too much (that was her favorite Christmas movie) and I was pretty depressed about her not being here. Steve watched the Rose Parade and asked me if any of you had mentioned it being as it is in Pasadena.
The part of your Christmas letter about your grandmother had me teary eyed too. When we talk about loved ones who've passed on they live again in a way. Memories are even more poignant around Christmas time with family.

Once again, I was mixed up. I looked back on your very newsy Christmas letter about your family, your health scare that was so worrisome (paraphrasing here) because of what your sister had been through, Justin, Kerry, your work with your church and your mom working on the church history, and it was the death last year of Bill that reminded me of my mom. They both passed the same year. I remember you speaking in a post of how much he meant to your niece Kerry, your nephew Justin, and yourself.

lol I see you are still mixed up as Kerry is her sister.  I think it is nice many of us here have siblings we can relate to and as you know, my brothers and I are close as I sometimes mention them in posts.
I'm sorry you missed out on the book. I've been leafing through it and it's very nice. I let my brother Aaron borrow it. Will look at it more thoroughly later after I get it back. |

Well Sunnyblue, that explains why Kerry saw Bill as another "dad". I know DB has mentioned her sister Erin. She will have to send me a family tree so I can keep names straight
You will have to let me know more about the book and what you like about it. I'm mad it slipped by me but I am sure you will enjoy it You have more of connection to the stadium anyway.
I enjoyed reading your Christmas posts. I feel ignorant at not knowing what Las luminarias and champurrado mean though

LOL! My family tree is pretty uncomplicated. I have two younger sisters and only one of us has kids (two). Kerry was very close to Bill for 30 years but even more so since our dad died nine years ago.
Champurrado/Abuelita (brand name) - Mexican chocolate drink. Great for cold nights.
Jimador - tequila brand, certain drinks made of that brand.
Las luminarias - will post more with a picture along with the other holiday pictures taken at various locations that I'm trying to get linked.

You mentioned in an email a story you were going to tell me when you heard from me again. You can email me the story whenever you have the time.
It is snowing here. We were originally suppose to get 1-2 inches but it is still snowing and the roads are a mess. I think the city is waiting to plow until the snow slows down. I took a day of vacation today because I wanted to take my Nook to Barnes and Noble. I was going to use a Starbucks gift certificate a friend bought me to enjoy a coffee, read and look at other books at the store. My daughter called me and said the streets are horrible and not to go out. So I am stuck at home I guess that is better than getting stuck out someplace.
I still have 2 weeks of vacation to use by June 30th and then I will have 3 weeks for the following fiscal year. I'm safe for whenever I get to come to California and will be able to use the new bank of vacation for the Seattle trip and California if need be.
There is someone who wants to take a second look at mom's house. I hope this will be someone who feels the house is just right for them. I try not to get my hopes up too high because we've had people look at it before. The house should have sold by now. It's been on the market foir a little over 6 months. It is just a bad time to be trying to sell it.

Oh my gosh. I am literally lol'ing! I could not recall your grandmother being mentioned in the letter either, so when Gil Hodges Fan said she was teary eyed it had me puzzled! Then I'm sure your mother did not appreciate being aged enough that you had a niece turning 50! 
Good luck with the sale of the house. I know I've said that before. I've known people with houses on the market for over a year. It all depends on what you're willing to accept. You probably have more leeway than people to have to make sure they cover their investment or need x amount of dollars to buy another house.
Let me guess, not only are your theme parks shut down, but the patio furniture is iced over too?

(I am probably doing this quote thing wrong but you all know me by now ) I didn't think of that Forloveofthegame but yes, it could have been very insulting. My mom is 73, but in order for me to have a niece who's 50, I'd have to have a brother or sister around 70. Hmmmm...

I do but I really am not sure what that has to do with anything. The book is about the Dodgers from Coast to Coast. It's not about any one stadium over another.
I am getting a few more laughs here too about the family tree.
To DB, I do agree, though that she is definitely the best looking 50 I have seen. My brothers are very impressed. You and she have a lot to be proud of! |
