Just a few things I haven't posted about yet:

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda's suspension for pine tar use;

Accusations that the Marlins were stealing signs from the Braves during their dominating sweep over the team from Atlanta this week;

Since I already posted about last weekend's controversies in St. Louis in the Dodgers' thread, how about adding to this one:

Big Papi's bat flips continue to incense Rays pitchers.

Linda, I wondered what you think about the way the Diamondbacks have become head hunters of sorts, as it seems they are throwing at just about anyone anymore. I remember before the season started you had posted something about KT's comments saying he wanted pitchers to be more aggressive or something like that? Anyway the recent chain of HBPs between the Diamondbacks and Pirates had me thinking, and now I see Pirates manager Clint Hurdle disagrees with Tony La Russa. I can see there is a difference and I understand what is being said about where you are hit, in the hands or in the back. Anyway sometimes it seems hard to sort everything out about who did what and why.

LOL--the Diamondbacks have been irritating a lot of teams, and I think they're taking out their frustration at their horrible season on everyone else.

So Jesus Montero got into it with a scout at a minor league game? Geez...

Stay classy, Pap...

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon was suspended for seven games by Major League Baseball for making an obscene gesture to the phans at Citizens Bank Park.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
His agents later issued a statement from the closer, which read, "I am accepting my suspension and regret making any contact with the umpires. While I completely understand how the fans would perceive my gesture while being booed, it was not my intent whatsoever to insult the fans of Philadelphia. If it was perceived in that manner, I sincerely apologize. I look forward to returning this season and closing it out strong. For those reasons, I will not delay this process with an appeal."

Papelbon blew a three-run lead in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Marlins. Fans booed him as he left the mound. Just before he reached the dugout he grabbed his crotch in an exaggerated manner. West noticed it and ejected him. Papelbon and West then got into a heated confrontation. Papelbon made contact with West, who grabbed Papelbon's jersey.

...Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg held an 18-minute meeting with Papelbon in his office Monday afternoon. He said it was the first time he had spoken to Papelbon about the incident. He said Papelbon stuck to his story that he wasn't disrespecting fans.

Okay...whatever.

I am not too fond of that guy based on what I know about him.

Guess what, Cathy? Umpire Joe West was suspended for his part in this incident, too.

I know. Part of me says he was out of line but I have mixed feelings, Papelbon really pushed the button.

Thought I'd bump this one up for a new season!

You're kidding?! An apology via text that was not received resulted in a benches-clearing brawl between the "A"s and Royals.

Both the sender and receiver claimed to have proof, with two drastically different stories told to reporters. One says it was a misunderstanding, the other stops short of calling him a liar.

Unbelievable! Surprised

Oh and it did not end there, either. It spilled over into yesterday's game.

This could go on all season.

What is it coming down to when a Hall of Fame pitcher criticizes a popular current player for being disrespectful? Well, the player responds.

Okay, after all these suspensions, I'm going to have to update this one later.

Hey, Cathy, how about one of our favorite old Toreros--current Orioles reliever Brian Matusz was ejected for use of a foreign substance in an Orioles-Marlins game in Miami on Saturday. Wink

Benches cleared during the Marlins-Cubs game tonight after Chicago OFer Junior Lake homered and showed up the Marlins dugout. Oh, boy.

These don't really qualify as "controversies", I guess. But they're recent pitcher meltdowns:

Red Sox's Wade Miley outburst upsets manager John Farrell;

Phillies' Ken Giles' tirade frustrates skipper Ryne Sandberg.

Of course, both are pitching for teams that are struggling mightily this season.

And here's another from yesterday's Blue Jays-Royals contest.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
"He was crying like a baby,"...

"We started pitching inside and he started crying...

"..he gets upset like he's Barry Bonds. He's not Barry Bonds. He's been three years in the league."

That's Royals pitcher Edinson Volquez, about Blue Jays hitter Josh Donaldson. Tensions were high in the Blue Jays' win as the Royals continued to pitch inside.

I always like Volquez when he was with us, but boy, the Royals have been embroiled in a lot of their share of stuff this year! Seems they went from a good underdog story to a little bit cocky.

I know this story is over a week old, but Phillies coach Larry Bowa doesn't like quick pitches.

With the depth of the NL Central this season, and the Cubs expected to assert a challenge all season long, the weekend series between Chicago and division-leading St. Louis was a tooth-and-nails fight. Cubs manager Joe Maddon referred to the Cardinals as "vigilantes", and his team responded by plunking Redbird Kolten Wong three times in the second game of the set. The Card won the finale on Sunday, but the Cubs took the series, fighting to catch the Pirates for the lead wild card position.

Jonathan Papelbon, never away from controversy for too long--and the recently-acquired Nat pitcher starting a fight with the franchise player in the dugout yesterday.

Papelbon is nothing but trouble! He is just a punk and you cannot blame it on youthful immaturity, because this is his 11th season in the Majors. And you know something, if he had not appealed his suspension last week, he would not be in the dugout at all yesterday! He was suspended for throwing near Manny Machado's head when the Nationals played the Orioles last Wednesday. Article from mlb.com

So he was allowed to still play while appealing that. Then he gets himself in more hot water, but at least he apologized right away. But still not the brightest bulb!

Okay, first big one of the 2016 season--it happened in today's Blue Jays-Rangers game in Texas. Of course, the simmering tensions date back to their playoff series last October.

This season, it got underway on Friday night with the debut of that-player-who-waited-12-years-for-his-major-league-callup.

Today, Jose Bautista's hard slide into second base ignited it further. Eight ejections resulted.

Here's how it all went down.

Yes, that was one heck of a punch and then total chaos! I can understand how the Rangers have been angry about him going back to last year's playoffs. As far as the slide goes, i thought the new rule was supposed to prevent hard sliding. I can see there is no love lost between them now. And that was supposed to be the last regular season game the 2 teams play between each other so it would sure be interesting if they had to face each other in the playoffs again.

Isn't it going to be interesting now that the Rangers are facing the Blue Jays in the ALDS? LOL

Anyway, I wanted to catch up on this thread from the last few weeks of the season.

So, thoughts on the Memorial Day brouhaha at AT&T Park featuring Bryce charging the mound at Jints reliever Hunter Strickland? That was fun from a spectator's viewpoint, but even better was the final score--Nats beating the Battery Chuckers. Very Happy
