Hall of Fame first baseman Willie McCovey has passed away at age 80. Various health issues had plagued him until his death today.

McCovey's career spanned 22 years and, breaking into the majors in 1959, he played in four decades before retiring in 1980. Of those seasons, 19 were spent in San Francisco.

He is also the namesake of McCovey Cove, in the shadow of AT&T Park.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
"Baseball has lost a giant, in every sense of the word, with Willie McCovey's passing this afternoon," Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said in a statement.

Always a worthy opponent, may he rest in peace.

He was a good Padre for a couple of years and it was great to have both him and Dave Winfield in the lineup. Rest in peace.
