|I almost posted this in the Tidbits thread, but it's enough for its own topic of discussion. We already know many of the back stories on how major league teams got their names, but this column from MLB.com examines what would be an appropriate "new" name for each team based on their location or history.
Some of these are actually pretty cool names, while others are just plain silly/bordering on ridiculous.
Let me state that I oppose the renaming of the Dodgers to "Avocados" and the Padres to "Surfers." First, if the Cardinals are going to be the "Explorers", then using the same logic, why wouldn't the Padres remain the Padres?
Well, at least they didn't rename the Dodgers something trite like the "Stars" or the "Traffic".
But I must say I love the "Chupacabras" of Arizona.
And a nod to creativity for the Minnesota Princes.
"The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
