It's been awhile since we've had something like this to follow, but as you know, it's been my custom to post a separate thread every time a major league hitter reaches a streak of 30 or more (ideally, so we could comment on it until the streak ended). Well, so much for that with this particular thread.

Royals utility play Whit Merrifield had a 31-game hitting streak that ended on April 11, but he set a Royals team record, breaking that of Hall of Famer George Brett, who held the previous record at 30 games in ___.

However, this was another case of a hitting streak that "carried over" from the 2018 season, much like Jimmy Rollins' hitting streak with the Phillies which was split between the 2005 and 2006 seasons. According to an article from Associated Press, Merrifield had said during the first week of the season that "I didn’t even know I had a streak going until the offseason when someone told me I finished on 20 games."

In my opinion it's still deserving of some sort of denotation like an asterisk if it didn't take place all within one season.

But, congratulations to him nonetheless.

Lol at name of the thread Wink Good run for Whit.

I agree it seems they should be treated differently for streaks that carry over. I thought the whole idea of a streak impressing fans was to show how long you can stay hot. If you are not playing for a few months then it really is not the same as doing it all in 1 season. There would be a lot more pressure having it go on for 5 or 6 weeks straight.
