I'll start this one. The Angels are celebrating the 60th anniversary in franchise history in 2021.

The Angels open the season at Angel Stadium today with a 4-game series vs. the White Sox.

The Angels won with a late rally. It was nice to have a night game to watch after the Dodgers loss.

Wow! Not sure if anyone saw the game tonight (Angels won, 7-4) but it had a lot of quirks and many things you would not normally see in a game. They took 3 of 4 from the White Sox to start the season but tonight it was the Shohei Show. He was the starting pitcher and also in the lineup as DH. That kind of defeats the point of having a DH, right? Rolling Eyes

Shohei became the first pitcher to bat second in a major league game since 1903. He hit 100 on the gun 3 times in the top of the first and then homered in the bottom of the inning!

According to mlb.com, "he’s the first player to hit a ball at least 110 mph off the bat and throw a pitch at least 100 mph in the same game tracked by Statcast.

The game recap is linked here

Quote:
Ohtani became the first Angels pitcher to get a hit in an American League game since Clyde Wright on Sept. 8, 1972, and the first Angels pitcher to get a hit in an AL game since Nolan Ryan on Sept. 30, 1972. The designated hitter rule was implemented in 1973 and the Angels never had a pitcher hit for themselves with the DH available until Ohtani on Sunday.

In the 5th inning he was taken out after a freak play:

Quote:
He walked back-to-back batters to load the bases with two outs but remained in the game to face Yoán Moncada despite being at 85 pitches. Ohtani promptly uncorked a wild pitch that brought a run home and then struck out Moncada on a 3-2 splitter, but it got past catcher Max Stassi. First baseman Jared Walsh couldn’t handle the throw, allowing both runners to score.

And even worse for the Angels and Ohtani, he jumped to try to catch the throw back home but landed awkwardly on José Abreu at home plate. Ohtani had thrown 92 pitches and was expected to be pulled from the game regardless but had to gingerly walk back to the dugout after the play. The Angels announced during the game that Ohtani experienced general soreness but wasn't removed due to injury.

This could be really fun to watch this year. I am glad the Angels are being more aggressive tapping into both sides of his talent.

Having a pitcher hit? Wow, what a novelty. Razz

A reminder, though, if you get rid of the DH in an American League game then you still have the pitcher's spot coming up after Shohei leaves the game. They would never do that. Rolling Eyes

Too bad they lost to the Astros in the next game when Dylan Bundy had such a good start. Wish they played more than 2 games in that series.

Damn. Dexter Fowler will miss six to nine months with an ACL tear? (Nine months puts them right in the middle of January.)

The Blue Jays absolutely destroyed the Angels yesterday, 15-1, and then tonight's game was postponed due to bad weather. Perhaps that was a good thing. Then again, maybe not, because it is the best thing to get right back on the horse as soon as you can afterward, rather than wait.

The Halos play the next three in K.C. before heading back to the OC to host Minnesota and Texas.

Well, the Angels lost their series in Kansas City, concluding their first road trip of the season, and now return to Anaheim to face the Twins and the Rangers.

The Halos won last night, 10-3, on a Justin Upton grand slam.

Oh-oh! Tonight and tomorrow's games cancelled due to a positive COVID test by someone with the Twins. Sad
