Every time this rolls around, I get goosebumps thinking back to the 1981 season. One of the benefits of being an "older" fan is having experienced different eras of baseball in their fullness, and this is a very good example.

Will be posting more about this while noting that the Dodgers play their home opener tomorrow, four decades to the precise day after Fernando was a last minute substitution for scheduled Opening Day 1981 pitcher, Jerry Reuss, who'd been injured. It was also the Dodgers' home opener. In Reuss' place, the 20-year-old pitched a complete game and shut out the Astros, causing Vin to exclaim, "And a little child shall lead them." Despite the strike-shortened season stealing some games from his rookie season, once teams returned to play, Fernando continued to lead the Dodgers to the postseason...and then to the elusive world championship against the Yankees, the same team they'd lost to in back-to-back World Series (1977-7Cool.

#34 forever!

If any player was a folk hero that was him.

This isn't going unnoticed outside of Socal, either.
