I know the hot topic for those of us posting here is the NL wild card. But has anyone looked at the AL wild card race? It's looking like the Red Sox and Yankees might both make it in, the Rays are leading the AL East, and their records are both better than the second place teams in other divisions.

Right now it looks like this:

New York 76-53 (5 back of Rays)
Boston 75-56 (7 back of Rays)
Oakland 71-59 (behind Houston by 6.5 games)

Those are just the AL teams with over 70 wins.

The NL West right now is the closest division race (2.5 games between Dodgers & Jints) - besides those 2 teams, the second wild card race right now is between the Reds (71-60) and Padres (69-61).

Thanks, Sunny. You just saved me a lot of work because I was planning on starting my annual wild card thread very soon but now I don't have to research all the details. Smile

Rolling Eyes I sure miss the days when my team was firmly in control of the second wild card and still had a shot at the division!

Obviously for the AL the only team of those in the running I would want to see is Oakland. That will probably be a real stretch for them, though.

Anyone been paying attention to the AL West lately? The Mariners have made a strong push and taken over second place. Their record right now is 75-62 which puts them a game ahead of Oakland and a few games out of the wild card lead with the Yankees, 78-58. I wish either Oakland or Seattle would take over first from the Astros! Evil or Very Mad

And, important to note, the Mariners are starting a series with the Astros in Houston, which should be key to these races this week.

The Blue Jays are hot now too - and they are really making a run for the AL wild card.

Keeping tabs on the NL wild card race...

As of this writing:

-The Reds sport a 75-70 record, Cardinals at 76-69 (leading the second WC race).

-The Padres, should they hold their current lead in the late innings, would check in at 75-70.

-The Phillies stand at 73-72, barely over .500 and in second place in the NL East, but a dark horse in the race for the second wild card.

And, in the AL, the best competition comes out of the East:

-Yankees and Blue Jays are tied at 82-64, while the Red Sox are on their heels with an 83-65 record. All three teams are tied for second place in the AL East, eight games behind the Rays.

-The Athletics and Mariners are neck-and-neck, with 78-67 and 78-68 records, respectively. They trail the Astros in the AL West by 7 and 7.5 games.

We will be rooting for the Dodgers against the Reds this weekend while at the same time, we play the Cardinals in St. Louis! It sure is a crazy time of year when so many teams are left hanging on to their hopes.

I think it's almost safe to say the Cardinals have practically locked down the second wild card in the NL, having won 11 straight at this point.

Got to give it up for St. Louis, they have now won 15 straight games. That is the way you want to be in September, hot as blazes.

The Yankees and Red Sox are tied for the AL wild card at 88-67. I guess that would be all we need, another Yankees-Red Sox playoffs appearance. ESPN will love it though!

I cannot believe the Cardinals have won 17 straight! They clinched the second NL wild card yesterday. So now we have only the AL to follow. It is down to the Yankees, Red Sox and Mariners all within 2.5 games of each other.

And so, it will be the Yankees and the Red Sox playing for the AL wild card on Tuesday. The Mariners and Blue Jays are out.
