Opening day loss for the Angels at home Sad but I expect they'll be a lot more improved this year over the last few seasons.

They're 0-2 now, but it's still early. Very Happy

Not a good opening weekend in Anaheim for the home team, as they lost three of four to the Asterisks*. Mad

The one bright spot of the four-game set took place on Saturday, when Thor made his Angel Stadium debut and notched a 2-0 win behind a Jared Walsh home run. But it was more than just a run-of-the-mill victory, it had
special significance.

From MLB.com:

Quote:
As a native Texan, Noah Syndergaard said he chose the No. 34 when he broke into the majors with the Mets to honor Nolan Ryan, his favorite pitcher growing up.

But when Syndergaard signed with the Angels over the offseason, it took on a new meaning, as he became the first Angels player to wear No. 34 since Nick Adenhart’s tragic death in 2009. It was only fitting that Syndergaard made his Halos debut on the 13th anniversary of Adenhart’s passing on Saturday and turned in a strong outing in a 2-0 win over the Astros at Angel Stadium.

...So while Syndergaard was pleased to throw 5 1/3 innings in his longest outing since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020, and pick up his first win since Sept. 2, 2019, he was even happier to honor Adenhart, who pitched with the Angels from 2008-09 before he was killed by a drunk driver just hours after throwing six scoreless innings against the "A" in his first start of the season in '09.

“The whole day, I just had goosebumps because it was the 13th anniversary of Adenhart being tragically taken away from us,” Syndergaard said. “I felt like an angel was by my side tonight. That was really special to me. A number is part of our identity. I chose No. 34 because I was a huge Nolan Ryan fan, but now, it kind of means something a little bit different to me. I'm trying to lift up Nick's name and spread awareness."

Also of note is that Thor beat Justin Verlander, who was making his first start since returning from TJ surgery.

Miami is in for three games beginning tonight, then the Angels take to the road to play Texas and then, *ahem*, Houston again.

That was so touching to read. How eerie is it that the date and uniform number and all matched up, and he pitched a terrific game.

And then, Miami moved in to Anaheim, and the next guy to get the ball was emotional for a different reason. It was O.C. native Michael Lorenzen, whose first start of the season was successful.

The Angels split a 4 game series at Texas this weekend. I watched a bit of Thor's "homecoming" game yesterday which they won.

I didn't actually have the Angels taking the series in Houston, but there you go, they did, last week before coming back to Anaheim, where they lost the weekend series to the Orioles. So we've seen some ups and downs from the team over the first couple of weeks.

They're now hosting the Guardians for a four-game set, and for the first time in MLB history, last night, there was a Guardian-Angel game. Laughing The Halos won that, 3-0, behind another superb start by Michael Lorenzen, who threw six innings of shutout ball to beat O.C. native Shane Bieber. A Taylor Ward home run in the fifth was all the support Lorenzen needed, but Ward added another to his collection in the seventh, and accounted for all scoring of the evening. It was the first multi-homer game of his career, in response to being inserted into the leadoff role with Shoh-time moving down in the order. Ward had missed the first eight games of the season with a strained left groin.

I don't usually look at the standings much until the end of April but whoa! - the Angels are 13-7 and in first place.

And would you check that out--winning two of three over the White Sox in Chicago this weekend, the Halos have now won seven of their last eight. (They have one more in the series to be played tomorrow, and will play three in Boston.)

Of course, it helped to have the Guardians at home for four during the week, so they could complete a sweep before taking to the road.

The homestand starting next weekend features both the Nationals and the Rays.

Watched a bit of Shoh-time in Boston with a great game in Boston yesterday! He struck out 11 Red Sox.

There was no better place than Fenway Park for him to have such a Babe Ruth-like game!

The Halos returned home after taking their series in Boston to host Washington for the weekend. And the Padres weren't the only Socal team to walk it off for Mothers Day, because the Angels beat the Nationals, 5-4, to take this series, too. It was Shotime and Anthony Rendon with the big hits in the ninth.

The Rays are in for three this week.

Time to update this one again!

It's been a wild week for the Angels. They won their series at home last week vs. the Rays, traveled north to Oakland and won another series, then flew to Texas where they're getting a series with the Rangers underway.

This could be a good season for all 3 Socal teams. I am encouraged to see the Angels playing so well. Maybe my boys will face them in the World series. Very Happy

Let's not get too overly optimistic about who they face in the World Series, Cathy. Twisted Evil

The Angels-Rangers series in Texas went poorly for the visitors, who were swept, but they rebounded to take the home series against Oakland over the weekend. The Rangers came to Anaheim for a brief two-game set, of which the Halos won the first game. They'll host the Blue Jays for four this weekend before heading back on the road to face the Yankees.

I last posted less than two weeks ago when the Angels were about to host the Blue Jays for four. Little did we know what that would lead to--a 12-game (at this writing) losing streak and the firing of manager Joe Maddon.

The Halos took to the road and were swept by both the Yankees and Phillies in back-to-back series, then returned home and have since lost the first of their four-game set against the Red Sox. During the process over the last fortnight, they've not just stumbled, but fallen to under .500 at 27-29, and now sit 8.5 games behind the first-place Asterisks*, albeit still in second place (which must speak volumes about the quality of competition in the AL West).

Things are looking quite bleak in Anaheim.

Now that stretched to a 13 game losing streak.

Maybe this thread should be renamed "Fallen Angels"? Surprised

After losing two to the Dodgers, they continued to lose to the Mariners last night.

And hey, who knows, maybe that dust-up on Sunday motivated the Angels a bit! Smile

Matt Thaiss has been optioned. There was a corresponding move (signing) and I'll post about it separately.

I saw a glimmer of hope for them last week but not anymore! The Astros swept the Angels this weekend. It sure showed us the big difference between the quality of those 2 teams.

With the exceptions of Mike Trout and Shoh-time, the Angels provide little of substance to watch. They split the two-game series in Miami, and are getting underway with a weekend set in Baltimore.

The Angels caught Baltimore at a really hot time and so they were swept there, seems like nothing new anymore no matter where they play. But now playing at home against Houston you would hope they could get a win and they lost the first of 3, last night. They are simply a mess. There's a lot to fix.
