Reading back on the last post of this thread, it's worth noting that the Upton brothers are now in San Diego!
An article in today's Union-Tribune-- linked here--is a worthwhile read, but I wasn't quite sure which thread to post it in. Finally, I decided that the brotherly love between Garrett and C.J. Stubbs was a fitting topic for this thread. I wish them both well. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. For the first time in Marlins history, two brothers played in the same lineup as Philadelphia defeated Miami, 6-2, at Marlins Park on Sunday afternoon. Fittingly, the Solano brothers--Donovan, who played second base, and Jhonatan, at catcher--combined for a run in the fifth inning, as Jhonatan doubled to drive in Donovan, who had singled and scored from first base on his brother's RBI. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Cathy, I'm sure you already love this story: Padres pitcher Tyson Ross was able to see his brother Joe's major league debut with the Nationals yesterday, live and in person--jetting from Cincinnati, where S.D. is playing this weekend, to D.C. for the day. The Nats lost to the Cubs, but the Ross family was thrilled to have big brother Tyson able to join them. Here's a nice read from the Union-Tribune about it. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. It was a really special moment for him and I am glad he got to be a part of that. The d'arnaud brothers of Lakewood, California, finally met up on the same major league field last night--both with NL East teams. Travis, of course, is the Mets' catcher, and Chase was called to pinch-hit for the Phillies in the seventh inning at Citizens' Bank Park. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Ironically, the last post in this thread was about the d'Arnaud brothers.
Now, Travis d'Arnaud is still playing, but it's all about the Mondesis. Raul Jr. made his major league debut last night; earlier this week, this appeared in the L.A. Times with some background I remember well:
"Royals Rookie Raul Mondesi Could Become the First Player to Make his Major League Debut in the World Series"
Bill Shaikin
It had been quite the calendar year for Raul Mondesi. Eight months after he was honored as National League Rookie of the Year, and two weeks after he had played in the All-Star game, he welcomed a son into the world.
The date was July 27, 1995. The son, also named Raul, grew up and tagged along with his father, a toddler scampering about the clubhouse at Dodger Stadium. The elder Raul Mondesi played seven years as an outfielder for the Dodgers, blessed with power, speed and a cannon for an arm.
In all, Mondesi played 13 years in the major leagues — 1,525 games in the regular season, none in the World Series.
The son has played zero games in the major leagues. The Kansas City Royals added him to their roster Tuesday, and he could play in the World Series.
"It's very hard to do," Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain said, "the type of thing that comes along once in a lifetime."
Mondesi, 20, would be the first player to make his major league debut in a World Series. He said his father, now the mayor of the Dominican Republic city of San Cristobal, would fly to New York to attend the World Series games there.
The younger Mondesi has not played above the double-A level, but Kansas City Manager Ned Yost said the Royals like his ability to switch-hit, bunt, play second base and shortstop, and pinch-run. Mondesi took the roster spot of Terrance Gore, who was the Royals' celebrated designated runner last October but had appeared in only two games and stolen one base in their 11 postseason games this year.
"Gore is a tremendous base stealer, but he's kind of a specialist," Yost said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome, kid Mondesi. But, I wish you were wearing Dodger blue instead of Royal blue!  _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. By now, many know the big news announced by the Red Sox, that young Travis Shaw will be their starting third baseman--over the Panda--leaving an overpaid former Battery Chucker on the bench in Boston.
Shaw is the son of former MLB pitcher Jeff Shaw. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
With the Dodgers' call-up of Cody Bellinger this week, it should be mentioned that his father is former Yankee Clay Bellinger. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. My, my, how baseball has changed over five months. I just realized that the last entry in this thread was about Cody's call-up, five months and one day ago.
Been meaning to post about something that happened last weekend pertaining to baseball families:
Last Saturday, Reds RHP Luke Farrell became the first major league pitcher to face a team managed by his father, Red Sox manager John Farrell. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. It seems strange that this would be the first time it happened. _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |
On Monday, the Battery Chuckers called up RHP Dereck Rodriguez, son of Pudge. (And in case anyone was wondering, Brett Bochy is still pitching at Triple A Sacramento.) _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I thought about posting this in the Grid-Diamond thread but it really belongs here. Jared Goff's dad Jerry played in Major League Baseball for 6 seasons. He was mostly a catcher and for the Expos, Pirates and Astros. I knew of him and think we talked about it before but I decided to look up more information after Jared made it into this year's Super Bowl.
