Reading back on the last post of this thread, it's worth noting that the Upton brothers are now in San Diego!
An article in today's Union-Tribune-- linked here--is a worthwhile read, but I wasn't quite sure which thread to post it in. Finally, I decided that the brotherly love between Garrett and C.J. Stubbs was a fitting topic for this thread. I wish them both well. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. For the first time in Marlins history, two brothers played in the same lineup as Philadelphia defeated Miami, 6-2, at Marlins Park on Sunday afternoon. Fittingly, the Solano brothers--Donovan, who played second base, and Jhonatan, at catcher--combined for a run in the fifth inning, as Jhonatan doubled to drive in Donovan, who had singled and scored from first base on his brother's RBI. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Cathy, I'm sure you already love this story: Padres pitcher Tyson Ross was able to see his brother Joe's major league debut with the Nationals yesterday, live and in person--jetting from Cincinnati, where S.D. is playing this weekend, to D.C. for the day. The Nats lost to the Cubs, but the Ross family was thrilled to have big brother Tyson able to join them. Here's a nice read from the Union-Tribune about it. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. The d'arnaud brothers of Lakewood, California, finally met up on the same major league field last night--both with NL East teams. Travis, of course, is the Mets' catcher, and Chase was called to pinch-hit for the Phillies in the seventh inning at Citizens' Bank Park. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Ironically, the last post in this thread was about the d'Arnaud brothers.
Now, Travis d'Arnaud is still playing, but it's all about the Mondesis. Raul Jr. made his major league debut last night; earlier this week, this appeared in the L.A. Times with some background I remember well:
"Royals Rookie Raul Mondesi Could Become the First Player to Make his Major League Debut in the World Series"
Bill Shaikin
It had been quite the calendar year for Raul Mondesi. Eight months after he was honored as National League Rookie of the Year, and two weeks after he had played in the All-Star game, he welcomed a son into the world.
The date was July 27, 1995. The son, also named Raul, grew up and tagged along with his father, a toddler scampering about the clubhouse at Dodger Stadium. The elder Raul Mondesi played seven years as an outfielder for the Dodgers, blessed with power, speed and a cannon for an arm.
In all, Mondesi played 13 years in the major leagues — 1,525 games in the regular season, none in the World Series.
The son has played zero games in the major leagues. The Kansas City Royals added him to their roster Tuesday, and he could play in the World Series.
"It's very hard to do," Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain said, "the type of thing that comes along once in a lifetime."
Mondesi, 20, would be the first player to make his major league debut in a World Series. He said his father, now the mayor of the Dominican Republic city of San Cristobal, would fly to New York to attend the World Series games there.
The younger Mondesi has not played above the double-A level, but Kansas City Manager Ned Yost said the Royals like his ability to switch-hit, bunt, play second base and shortstop, and pinch-run. Mondesi took the roster spot of Terrance Gore, who was the Royals' celebrated designated runner last October but had appeared in only two games and stolen one base in their 11 postseason games this year.
"Gore is a tremendous base stealer, but he's kind of a specialist," Yost said.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome, kid Mondesi. But, I wish you were wearing Dodger blue instead of Royal blue!  _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. By now, many know the big news announced by the Red Sox, that young Travis Shaw will be their starting third baseman--over the Panda--leaving an overpaid former Battery Chucker on the bench in Boston.
Shaw is the son of former MLB pitcher Jeff Shaw. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
With the Dodgers' call-up of Cody Bellinger this week, it should be mentioned that his father is former Yankee Clay Bellinger. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. My, my, how baseball has changed over five months. I just realized that the last entry in this thread was about Cody's call-up, five months and one day ago.
Been meaning to post about something that happened last weekend pertaining to baseball families:
Last Saturday, Reds RHP Luke Farrell became the first major league pitcher to face a team managed by his father, Red Sox manager John Farrell. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. On Monday, the Battery Chuckers called up RHP Dereck Rodriguez, son of Pudge. (And in case anyone was wondering, Brett Bochy is still pitching at Triple A Sacramento.) _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I thought about posting this in the Grid-Diamond thread but it really belongs here. Jared Goff's dad Jerry played in Major League Baseball for 6 seasons. He was mostly a catcher and for the Expos, Pirates and Astros. I knew of him and think we talked about it before but I decided to look up more information after Jared made it into this year's Super Bowl.
The Blue Jays have announced Vlad Jr. has been called up and will play in their home series vs. the Athletics starting Friday! The 3B prospect is also the top prospect in all of MLB and of course his dad just went into the Hall of Fame last year, so it will be exciting for a lot of people! _________________ "Baseball is an allegorical play about America, a poetic, complex, and subtle play of courage, fear, good luck, mistakes, patience about fate, and sober self-esteem." - Saul Steinberg |
Should be exciting. Interesting that we may have two "Juniors" making some noise in the early going!
MLB.com also examines current sons of former players in MLB, and also lists the best father-son combos in baseball history. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. With Cavan Biggio's call-up by the Blue Jays this weekend, Toronto now has two sons of Hall of Famers on their team.
And even the Battery Chuckers are getting a little attention with the call-up of Hall of Famer Carl Yaztrzmski's grandson, Mike. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola's brother was called up to the Mariners last weekend. What's remarkable about this is that catcher Austin Nola has spent eight seasons in the minor leagues, while 2019 is Aaron's fifth season in the majors.
And now, to update the Milestones thread.  _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
And here's a first in MLB: tonight in Pittsburgh, Marlins LHP Brian Moran became the first major league pitcher to strike out his brother--Pirates third baseman Colin Moran.
What's even odder is that it was Brian's major league debut, and as fate would have it, Colin was the first hitter he faced in the bigs.
(Miami won the game, by the way.) _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
Very emotional moment for Yaz last night, as the Hall of Famer watched his grandson play for the Jints in person, for the very first time. That's because they opened a series at Fenway Park, and how exciting it must have been for him to see young Mike homer. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I realized that I never bumped this thread to mention the Astros' Alex Bregman and his connection to Washington baseball--his grandfather, Stanley Bregman, had a part in moving the Senators from D.C. Quite an interesting twist, so the name Bregman is probably pretty unpopular in the nation's capital.
Very interesting and something noted during the World Series that I had not known before--here's some background. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Evidently this got past me, that both of these Socal boys were called up last season, but I just read this article on MLB.com about Tyler and Scott Heineman, brothers playing for the Jints and Rangers, respectively. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. And from earlier in the preseason, there was this meeting between the Bishop brothers--Hunter of the Jints and Braden of the Mariners. Both outfielders in their respective teams' camps, Norcal is represented by siblings on these two teams based in the Pacific northwest. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Brothers Corey and Kyle Seager faced off for the first time in their major league careers as the Dodgers hosted the Mariners last night--and what a game it was!
From MLB.com:
Quote: | Kyle, the 32-year-old third baseman for the Mariners, and Corey, the 26-year-old shortstop for the Dodgers, squared off at Dodger Stadium and both had homered before the third inning was over. Parents Jeff and Jody had to watch the Dodgers' 11-9 victory on TV from their North Carolina home. That’s the bitter part.
The Seagers became the first brothers to homer for opposing teams in the same game since Cesar and Felipe Crespo did it for the Padres and Giants, respectively, on June 7, 2001. The last pair of brothers to homer as teammates in a game was Justin and B.J. Upton on Sept. 27, 2014, as members of the Braves.
According to Mariners research, Kyle (Gold Glove) and Corey (two Silver Sluggers) became one of four brother duos to face off after each has won either a Gold Glove or a Silver Slugger, joining Roberto and Sandy Alomar; Clete and Ken Boyer; and Bengie and Yadier Molina.
They also became the 15th set of brothers to face each other after both have been named to an All-Star team and one of 12 sets of brothers in MLB history to face each other with at least 75 home runs each. |
That's quite a bit of trivia there! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."
Terrific game for both brothers! It's too bad fans couldn't have been there for that. The brothers talk about each other - I got a kick out of reading this. |
