Today, the CIF title game is being played at Dodger Stadium as I type, and
as such, we can only wonder what future major leaguers will come out of the
contest between Kennedy and Chatsworth High Schools. (Phillies phans here
might remember that last year Randy Wolf's team, the El Camino Real
Conquistadors--which Wolf works with as a volunteer instructor during MLB's
offseason--won it all.)

In the past, many kids who later did pretty well in the big show have gotten
their start right on that field in Chavez Ravine, in the CIF title game.

Some interesting facts according to dodgers.com:

"Over the years, several future major leaguers have played in L.A. City
championship games at Dodger Stadium, including two-time American League Cy
Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen, who pitched a no-hitter for Cleveland
High School of Reseda to defeat Palisades, 13-0, in the 1982 title contest.
Current Chicago White Sox pitching ace Jon Garland was on the Kennedy
(Granada Hills) High School teams, which won City championships in 1995 and
1996. Randy Wolf of the Philadelphia Phillies was the victorious pitcher in
both 1993 and 1994, when El Camino Real captured back-to-back titles.
Garret Anderson of the Angels played on the Kennedy team, which took the
1989 City crown. Baltimore Orioles reliever Steve Reed was on the first
Chatsworth title-winning team of 1983.

Longtime big-league reliever Rod Beck pitched for Grant (Van Nuys) High
School, the winner of the 1986 City title.

In addition, Hall of Fame National Football League quarterback John Elway,
who played one season in the New York Yankees' farm system, was a member of
the 1978 and 1979 Granada Hills High School teams, which won back-to-back
L.A. City baseball championships at Dodger Stadium. In the 1979 title game,
Granada Hills faced Crenshaw High School, which featured among its players,
outfielder Darryl Strawberry, who hit a home run in that contest."

Then somehow when I was in the process of updating the thread, I made a

Kennedy High, alma mater of MLB players such as Jon Garland and Garret
Anderson, won the game on Saturday.

But on an individual note, I think this notation by the Times is pretty
cool. Keep in mind that even in the major leagues, Dodger Stadium is
considered a pitcher's ballpark.

And remember this name...

"One home run at Dodger Stadium hit by a 15-year-old sophomore might be
considered a fluke. But when the same player does it again a year later as
a 16-year-old junior, it means he could be a once-in-a-lifetime player.

Matt Dominguez, Chatsworth's third baseman, hit a sixth-inning home run over
the left-field wall, his 28th career home run for the Chancellors. Last
season, he hit a home run down the left-field line at Dodger Stadium.

'That was a bomb,' said Kennedy pitcher Fabian Williamson of Dominguez's
latest blast.

The only disappointment for Dominguez is that his team has lost each time in
the championship game.

But college coaches and professional scouts can't wait to finally take a
crack at convincing Dominguez to join them next season when he's a senior."
