Okay...a little fact...as you all know I read everything about Jason Varitek. He was interviewed about his favorite baseball movie, maybe by SI....not sure who actually....and he said Bull Durham and then commenced to recite the Kevin Costner sililoquy word for word:

I'm really excited for the Fever Pitch DVD to come out....it should be fun to see some of the extra scenes. At the premiere in April Tek was talking about a speaking part that he had that was cut.....he was so cute complaing about how the one line that he had, they cut out of the movie.

I love Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, and For Love of the Game (if only for the announcing --the story line was kind of trite).

But nobody has mentioned The Sandlot?

And sorry, but I just can't believe two classics didn't make anyone's lists:

Pride of the Yankees (11 Oscar nominations!)

and

Bang the Drum Slowly.

Both featured great acting performances and great screenplays!

Question: Has anyone seen Fears strike Out (1957) with Anthony Perkins. Never heard of it before but I do want to see it now.

I also can't wait for Fever Pitch to be on DVD. Never did get around to watching it on the big screen.

Went to Best Buy last night and noticed that Fever Pitch is out next week! Yeah! Oh, and I noticed Best Buy has the DVD "Queer Guy for the Red Sox"

I may have mentioned this on the old board but when I was a sophmore in high school I had to interview Tom Guiry (the main kid in The Sandlot) for a class project. His older brother Joe was a year ahead of me in school. Tom didn't go to my high school because he needed special courses so that he could go to HS and make movies. My school didn't offer that but a nearby private school did.

Linda, Bang the Drum Slowly gets me every time. It's such a good movie and I always feel so bad in the end when the teammates show their true colors.

Another good one is The Winning Team starring Ronald Reagan and Doris Day.

What a sight for sore eyes tonight at Dodger Stadium (no, not the final score ) but Kevin Costner himself, singing "Take me out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch. He was about three rows ahead of where Crzblue and I sat last Friday night. Aahhhh

Not only the star of several baseball movies...but a real fan, too.

I would have been going just a little nuts if Kevin Costner was sitting three rows in front of me! He is truly a fave actor of mine. I still have not seen "The Upside of Anger," but it's on my short list of things to do.

I bought "Major League" for one very good reason: Steve Yeager, one of the major hunks to play the game, is shown without his shirt.

For those unfamiliar with the movie, the Cleveland Indians' owner, a woman who wants to move the team to Florida, has reduced the team's perks. Instead of a Jacuzzi, guys have to soak in a tub with an outboard motor. Yang is standing by the tub while Tom Berenger is soaking his injuries.

I just saw a very good movied called Bleacher Bums and I really do recommend it. The movie is based on a play of the same name and is about a group of fans sitting in the outfield bleacher seats. The film is obviously about the Cubs and takes place in Wrigley. I'm guessing the film couldn't get the rights to use the Cubs or Wrigley they changed the name of the team to the Bruins and the ballpark to Lakeview. But that's all that was changed. There are conversations about the last time the team won the world series and the years they are talking about are the years the Cubs went. It feels as if someone just went through the script and scratched out Cubs every time it was mentioned. That isn't really a bad thing, at least it wasn't for me, because I got it. The movie isn't so much about the game but about these people sitting in the bleacher seats during a Chicago Bruins/St Louis Eagles (and yes the Eagles uniforms are green) game. It's really interesting to see character growth during a baseball game.

The stadium was totally Wrigley. It had Ivy, outfield bleachers, the wooden scoreboard, the kids hanging around outside on the street trying to catch a homer, and the orange marque in front. The Cubs really should have given permission for their name and ballpark to be used in this great movie.

Watch for Rupert...he's great!


As you can tell from this picture from a production of the play the real names of both teams involved were used. Good thing they're not showing that "F"

It should be noted that this movie was not released in theatres, but is an exclusive Showtime production in 2002.

Years ago I saw the stage production of "Bleacher Bums" and I have to say, I thought it was much better. In that show, the name "Cubs" was freely used and it was clear that was the team. From what I understand, the team refused to (for whatever reason) allow the film adaptation to use it.

Good point...however, the gambling went on in the stage play so I still don't understand. Maybe that's considered different?

Yesterday I picked up fever pitch and we watched it last night..............I love this movie. We saw it the first day it was released and I'm really glad I bought it. Just makes last seasons WS win more memorable.

I also bought Fever Pitch. I watched it a second time so that my aunt would watch it. It was great not only reliving the WS but my trip to Fenway.
