Can you tell I'm sappy?
P.S. I'm hoping to bump one of the above in the near future in favor of "Three Nights in August". |

I love the ones staring Kevin Costner... Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, For the Love of the Game. I also enjoyed The Rookie. And how could you not like Major League! |

I really liked Back to the Minors even though a lot of people trashed it. What can I say? I practically grew up with Scott Bakula in my living room. |

The Rookie
A League of Their Own
Okay...a little fact...as you all know I read everything about Jason Varitek. He was interviewed about his favorite baseball movie, maybe by SI....not sure who actually....and he said Bull Durham and then commenced to recite the Kevin Costner sililoquy word for word:
Quote: | I believe in the soul, the c__k, the p__sy, the small of a woman's
back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, long foreplay, show tunes, and that the novels of Thomas Pynchon are self-indulgent, overrated crap.
I believe that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, I believe that there
oughtta be a constitutional amendment outlawing astro-turf and the designated hitter, I believe in the "sweet spot", voting every election, soft core pornography, chocolate chip cookies, opening your presents on Christmas morning rather than Christmas eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last for 7 days. |
Now I'd really like to hear that....

I'm really excited for the Fever Pitch DVD to come out....it should be fun to see some of the extra scenes. At the premiere in April Tek was talking about a speaking part that he had that was cut.....he was so cute complaing about how the one line that he had, they cut out of the movie. |

I love Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, and For Love of the Game (if only for the announcing --the story line was kind of trite).
But nobody has mentioned The Sandlot?
And sorry, but I just can't believe two classics didn't make anyone's lists:
Pride of the Yankees (11 Oscar nominations!)
and
Bang the Drum Slowly.
Both featured great acting performances and great screenplays! _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

My favorites in no oder
Pride of the Yankees
Fields of Dreams
Bull Durham
The Natural
A League of their Own
Question: Has anyone seen Fears strike Out (1957) with Anthony Perkins. Never heard of it before but I do want to see it now.
I also can't wait for Fever Pitch to be on DVD. Never did get around to watching it on the big screen.
Edit to add
Went to Best Buy last night and noticed that Fever Pitch is out next week! Yeah! Oh, and I noticed Best Buy has the DVD "Queer Guy for the Red Sox" |

I may have mentioned this on the old board but when I was a sophmore in high school I had to interview Tom Guiry (the main kid in The Sandlot) for a class project. His older brother Joe was a year ahead of me in school. Tom didn't go to my high school because he needed special courses so that he could go to HS and make movies. My school didn't offer that but a nearby private school did.
Linda, Bang the Drum Slowly gets me every time. It's such a good movie and I always feel so bad in the end when the teammates show their true colors.
Another good one is The Winning Team starring Ronald Reagan and Doris Day. |

What a sight for sore eyes tonight at Dodger Stadium (no, not the final score ) but Kevin Costner himself, singing "Take me out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch. He was about three rows ahead of where Crzblue and I sat last Friday night. Aahhhh
Not only the star of several baseball movies...but a real fan, too. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. If the Yankees are the most successful team in baseball history, the Dodgers are the most essential. Their legacy is unique."

Reminds me of a great sound byte that Harpo has.
DB,
I would have been going just a little nuts if Kevin Costner was sitting three rows in front of me! He is truly a fave actor of mine. I still have not seen "The Upside of Anger," but it's on my short list of things to do. |

Good film. Kevin plays a former baseball player who has his own radio show but refuses to talk about baseball on the air. His house is full of balls and bats that he signs and sells. Complex character in a good movie. |

I bought "Major League" for one very good reason: Steve Yeager, one of the major hunks to play the game, is shown without his shirt.
For those unfamiliar with the movie, the Cleveland Indians' owner, a woman who wants to move the team to Florida, has reduced the team's perks. Instead of a Jacuzzi, guys have to soak in a tub with an outboard motor. Yang is standing by the tub while Tom Berenger is soaking his injuries. |

Yikes! I saw that movie when it was new, in the theater, and had FORGOTTEN all about that! Thanks for the reminder...I swear sometimes I feel like I sleepwalked through that part of my life.
Remember the famous Playgirl spread? Ahem, those catchers are something nice!
I haven't seen "Major League" in probably 15 years, but as I recall, that was the first time I ever heard of a closer coming in to theme music. The funny thing is that when the movie was made, the Indians hadn't been in a postseason game in over 30 years (lending a far-fetched aura to the theme of them playing in the World Series), and within a few years after its release they had built up a contender. I always wondered if it was the catalyst. _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. I own all three ML movies...I'll have to go rewatch the first one now If I am not mistaken it was AFTER the movie came out that Mitch Williams changed his number to 99 and started using Wild Thing |

I just saw a very good movied called Bleacher Bums and I really do recommend it. The movie is based on a play of the same name and is about a group of fans sitting in the outfield bleacher seats. The film is obviously about the Cubs and takes place in Wrigley. I'm guessing the film couldn't get the rights to use the Cubs or Wrigley they changed the name of the team to the Bruins and the ballpark to Lakeview. But that's all that was changed. There are conversations about the last time the team won the world series and the years they are talking about are the years the Cubs went. It feels as if someone just went through the script and scratched out Cubs every time it was mentioned. That isn't really a bad thing, at least it wasn't for me, because I got it. The movie isn't so much about the game but about these people sitting in the bleacher seats during a Chicago Bruins/St Louis Eagles (and yes the Eagles uniforms are green) game. It's really interesting to see character growth during a baseball game.
The stadium was totally Wrigley. It had Ivy, outfield bleachers, the wooden scoreboard, the kids hanging around outside on the street trying to catch a homer, and the orange marque in front. The Cubs really should have given permission for their name and ballpark to be used in this great movie.
Watch for Rupert...he's great!
As you can tell from this picture from a production of the play the real names of both teams involved were used. Good thing they're not showing that "F"

It should be noted that this movie was not released in theatres, but is an exclusive Showtime production in 2002.
Years ago I saw the stage production of "Bleacher Bums" and I have to say, I thought it was much better. In that show, the name "Cubs" was freely used and it was clear that was the team. From what I understand, the team refused to (for whatever reason) allow the film adaptation to use it.

I think it's a shame the Cubs wouldn't allow their name to be used in the movie but my guess they didn't want their name to be associated with the gambling that went on in the stands. That's the only thing that I can think of that would possibly raise a red flag with the ownership. |

Good point...however, the gambling went on in the stage play so I still don't understand. Maybe that's considered different? _________________ "The Dodgers have always occupied an enormous place in the history of the game. Maybe the laws are different when it comes to the two mediums? I could be totally wrong on this but I believe the name Cubs is a public entitity so you can say it in a play or a movie as much as you want but the logo is owned. And if you're making a movie about Cubs fans at Wrigley field you have to show the Cubs logo.
For my brother's movie I know they had to get permission from the Flyers because one of the characters wears a Flyers sweatshirt. Earlier in the film one of the characters mentions she bought a green prom dress because her boyfriend's favorite team is the Eagles and I don't believe they had to get permission from the Eagles. The next time to see him I'll have to ask. He may have a better explanation. |
