The T-shirt includes the entire script and can be purchased at baseballhalloffame.org.

I've also been toying with the idea of creating a shirt for us on the forum but I need to do some thinking about how I would want it to look. I've designed a couple of shirts before.

What a GREAT idea! I've often thought of doing that myself (even mentioned it to Crzblue at the recent WIN event--if you haven't gotten that far on the board, check out the "WIN...WIN" thread), but I have no design skills (I am all "words", LOL) so if you have any specifics, please let me know! I have some myself--I like the idea of incorporating baseball diamonds, which is why I named the board as I did. Tell me what you come up with!

TShirt, I'll have to get

I'll start another thread for the creation of a t-shirt. I do think that baseball diamonds have to be incorporated in the shirt.

You know, crz, there was a fairly decent movie called Babe Ruth in which Pete Rose played Ty Cobb. Do you think TLJ did a better job than Pete?

I've never seen that movie but I don't think there is anyone out there that could have done a better job than TLJ playing the old cranky, nasty, racist Cobb.

Robert De Niro scared me in some of his performances, the latest one that really freaked me out is "Hide and Seek". I was watching this movie late one night by myself... Yikes!

Yeah I do have a decent baseball movie collection, but there are about 30 more I want to add. Back to the Minors is good for a laugh, and besides, I like Scott Bakula.

I love Scott Bakula. I even love Cats Don't Dance because he does his own singing. GREAT voice!

Other films that I don't have but enjoy are The Slugger's Wife and The Winning Team

I am at the Central library in L.A. right now and I renting 2 bb movies

Fear Strikes Out with Anthony Perkins _the story of baseball great Red Sox Jimmy Piersall (1957)

Talent for the Game -Edward James Olmos.

I am also checking out "our Town" just because this man in Boston told me it was about Peterborough, NH. It starts William Holden.

They are filming outside of the library.. I wonder what movie or series... Talking about filiming when my flight got cancelled out of Boston, I had to fly the next day thru Philadelphia. The flight to L.A. was full of a filming crew. The guy sitting next to me told me they were filming 'Rocky 6" I told him I did not know they had already made 5 (more than enough in my book).

Very good movie, a tearjerker though. It's been many years since I have seen or read it. But I believe the movie has a much happier ending than the play.

Crzblue...Oh, I am so jealous. You are just a short distance from OLOCR. By the way, speaking of filming, my cousin was watching the red carpet being rolled out at the Kodak Theatre and the bleachers being set up this week. I still think that's strange to see the awards being held there.

So since it's Oscar day, and we're talking, appropriately, about bleachers, I just wanted to add a few comments here.

First, a long-delayed response to Francine: Yes, the original "Angels in the Outfield" was better, but was about the Pittsburgh Pirates, not the "Angels." In fact, there was no major league baseball anywhere near the City of Angels when the original version was made. Most of us probably know all these things, but if you've never seen the original version, that might cause some confusion.

Quote:
Sandlot 1

Agreed, the second one lacked the charm of the first, whose redeeming feature was the final scene with, ah, my beloved Dodgers. Cool Cool

The "Bad News Bears" is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Geez, has it been that long since I was a teen who loved that movie? I still like it, but don't consider it among the best baseball movies ever made. There are too many that are deeper--but it was still a fun one. I can also still remember the cheers Walter Matthau got in the 1976 Hollywood Stars game for his part in that. He was a regular player in the HS game for several years, but that particular summer, even Vin was talking on the air about his new movie being a huge hit about a youth league team. Oh, and Brandon Cruz? He was so cute as a kid--my younger sister had a crush on him in the late '60s. His acting career ended not too long after "Bad News Bears." Later he ended up playing for several punk bands. Tatum O'Neal gave a great performance in the movie. She reminded me of some of the tougher girls I had played youth softball with. You have to remember that back then girls were just beginning to break barriers of playing on boys' teams.

Last comment about previously-mentioned movies:

I still think it's one of those odd quirks that "Pride of St. Louis" was filmed at Wrigley Field.

I just went to the Turner classic Movie site and suggested they show old baseball movies like It Happens Every Spring and The Winning Team with Doris Day and Ronald Regan. Two of many that I have not seen yet.

Oh and Fear Strikes Out ended up being a good movie. It reminded me of the talk in the Little League thread about parents being so hard on their children.

Not sure if Anthony Perkins played this role before the Psycho movie. He had a scene there that reminded me of that movie. Jimmy Piersall's dad pushed his kid so much that when he finally makes it to the Red Sox the kid is snapping at everyone. Actually he just expect the same from his teamates that his father expects from him. In addition in order to make the team, he is asked to play shortstop because of too many outfielders. This puts extra preasure on the kid so there is one scene when he is coming to bat and his dad from the stands calls him and tells him "Go there and hit and don't dissapoint me" The kid converts it into an inside the park HR and then starts climbing the screen and screaming to his dad thru the screen "Was that good enough for you dad" "Are you happy now" He just keeps going on and on until his teamates have to restrain him. He ends up strapped in an institution. The doctor finally gets thru him with the wife's help and the doctor's patience but not before his dad sneaks to see him and Jimmy starts loosing it again. The movie does leave an impression on you.

In the movie "Our Town" there is baseball mentioned Smile William Holden is playing with a baseball (kinda nervous) talking with the girl he likes. Afterwards he says, "See you later, I am going to play baseball now". On another scene, the man delivering the milk runs into the kid delivering newspapers. He asks the kid "Anything there I should know?" the kid responds "Can you believe that George Gibbs (William Holden) is giving up baseball to marry a girl?". LOL.

With all the talk about the WBC, did you know Ireland has a national baseball team? They actually won the bronze medal in the European championships a couple of years ago.

The Irish team is the subject of a new documentary. You might not be able to catch it on the big screen, but keep an eye out for it on DVD. Check the linkie for more info:

Thanks for posting, GD, how very timely! I had heard quite some time back that this movie was in production but forgot about it and had no idea it is ready for release. One of the theaters in the link is about five miles from me so I'll be seeing it right away, for sure!

I read the book recently. I had seen the movie many, many years ago. I would love to see that again. I'll have to look for it. I just remember that my brother hated Karl Malden for the rest of his life. (He played Piersall's dad and was a total a-hole.)

What I can't believe is they just made a movie called "Game 6" about the Mets/Red Sox WS which they ADVERTISED on the redsox.com. PLEEZ....leave that one for Met fans...LOL. Now, I grew up as a Met fan, but I was a Red Sox fan by then and I will never forget that game. And I wish I could...and the last thing I want to do is relive the moment. I absolutely could understand the ecstacy (other side of the coin) if you were a Mets fan, but please...don't subject me to the advertising....

Hey...while on that subject, five years ago, if you can believe the gall of this, the Dodgers were asked to take part in a "re-enactment" of Bobby Thomson's walk-off "Shot Heard 'Round the World" that sent the Giants to the 1951 World Series after a playoff series in which they outlasted the Dodgers. This historical commemoration was scheduled to take place before a Dodgers-Giants game in San Francisco to mark the 50th anniversary of that moment in October, 2001.

The Dodgers, of course, flatly said "no way" to that, knowing that pitcher Ralph Branca had borne the burden of that home run for half a century, and because of their refusal, were promptly labeled poor sports by Giants fans, fueled by their front office.

Of course, other than Branca and Thomson, only a few others--most notably Hall of Famers Duke Snider and Willie Mays, on opposite sides of the rivalry--who were on the field for that 1951 game were still alive in 2001, while most of the Red Sox and Mets from 1986 are still with us.

So who here has seen the "Emerald Diamond"? I noticed the schedule included many of our cities represented on this board. I had intended to view it here in S.D. but had a "religious" conflict of sorts and since there was only one screening, if you miss it, you miss out (I guess until it's released to video). I much prefer watching movies in a real theater, though.

It gives a link to add your name and info to the mailing list for more showings but that link doesn't work. Sad

Giving this one another bump.

So who here has seen, heard or read anything else about "Emerald Diamond"?

I found another review on www.onlyagame.org.

Well, nobody ever answered me about that one, so I have to assume that movie was never seen anywhere outside of L.A., New York and San Diego. Until now, that is.

Who wouldn't want to be at the Hall of Fame for this film festival, going on all weekend.

"Pride of the Yankees"--a few people (including me) mentioned it. Good movie.

And surely you wouldn't overlook "For Love of the Game", given our own Vinnie.

DRG, it came out in '99 and it's hard to believe you don't know it, but the synopsis is that of an aging pitcher and the woman he's involved in a relationship with. It's kind of sappy, but Kevin Costner plays the pitcher (which is a plus, in my book), and whatever shortcomings the story has in terms of the romance upstaging the action on the field can be overlooked with Vin's play-by-play throughout the last game Costner's character pitches, as the love story is told in flashbacks.

Costner personally recruited Vin as the right man for the job of calling the masterpiece his character pitches. Vinnie said it was fun for him and much easier because in this role, Vin had the luxury of knowing the outcome and what would happen with each batter BEFORE they came to the plate. Smile He scripted the words that would accompany each play.

Here's the review from baseball-almanac.com.

Quote:
The love story has an extra helping of cuteness, and legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully nearly takes on a leading role, waxing grandiloquent. It's no grand slam, but a solid double.

I'll have to agree with that summary.

Crz, you don't necessarily have to shlep all the way to Central Library to get the video. I THINK you can ask to have it sent to a branch near you. Here's how:

Go to the LAPL catalog (home page: http://lapl.org) and click on "Brows the Catalog." Enter your title, and when you see the record for the one you want (in this case, the first one), click on it. On the left-hand column, there's a link (that looks like the library card) which says, "Place hold." Follow the instructions, and have it sent to a branch.

Awesome Sue! Thank you so much!! I found it! BUT when I selected it (it says not checked out), and clicked on put on hold it said "Copies not Found" At least now I know that they have it at the Central Library. I've been taking the train to work, actually two trains so I change trains in Union Station. I can go from there to the Central Library.

Thanks!

By the way, here's a follow-up to the aforementioned Cooperstown festival. Wish I could have been there.
