Robert De Niro scared me in some of his performances, the latest one that really freaked me out is "Hide and Seek". I was watching this movie late one night by myself... Yikes!

I am at the Central library in L.A. right now and I renting 2 bb movies

Fear Strikes Out with Anthony Perkins _the story of baseball great Red Sox Jimmy Piersall (1957)

Talent for the Game -Edward James Olmos.

I am also checking out "our Town" just because this man in Boston told me it was about Peterborough, NH. It starts William Holden.

They are filming outside of the library.. I wonder what movie or series... Talking about filiming when my flight got cancelled out of Boston, I had to fly the next day thru Philadelphia. The flight to L.A. was full of a filming crew. The guy sitting next to me told me they were filming 'Rocky 6" I told him I did not know they had already made 5 (more than enough in my book).

I just went to the Turner classic Movie site and suggested they show old baseball movies like It Happens Every Spring and The Winning Team with Doris Day and Ronald Regan. Two of many that I have not seen yet.

Oh and Fear Strikes Out ended up being a good movie. It reminded me of the talk in the Little League thread about parents being so hard on their children.

Not sure if Anthony Perkins played this role before the Psycho movie. He had a scene there that reminded me of that movie. Jimmy Piersall's dad pushed his kid so much that when he finally makes it to the Red Sox the kid is snapping at everyone. Actually he just expect the same from his teamates that his father expects from him. In addition in order to make the team, he is asked to play shortstop because of too many outfielders. This puts extra preasure on the kid so there is one scene when he is coming to bat and his dad from the stands calls him and tells him "Go there and hit and don't dissapoint me" The kid converts it into an inside the park HR and then starts climbing the screen and screaming to his dad thru the screen "Was that good enough for you dad" "Are you happy now" He just keeps going on and on until his teamates have to restrain him. He ends up strapped in an institution. The doctor finally gets thru him with the wife's help and the doctor's patience but not before his dad sneaks to see him and Jimmy starts loosing it again. The movie does leave an impression on you.

In the movie "Our Town" there is baseball mentioned Smile

William Holden is playing with a baseball (kinda nervous) talking with the girl he likes. Afterwards he says, "See you later, I am going to play baseball now". On another scene, the man delivering the milk runs into the kid delivering newspapers. He asks the kid "Anything there I should know?" the kid responds "Can you believe that George Gibbs (William Holden) is giving up baseball to marry a girl?". LOL.

With all the talk about the WBC, did you know Ireland has a national baseball team? They actually won the bronze medal in the European championships a couple of years ago.

The Irish team is the subject of a new documentary. You might not be able to catch it on the big screen, but keep an eye out for it on DVD. Check the linkie for more info:

Thanks for posting, GD, how very timely! I had heard quite some time back that this movie was in production but forgot about it and had no idea it is ready for release. One of the theaters in the link is about five miles from me so I'll be seeing it right away, for sure!

So who here has seen the "Emerald Diamond"? I noticed the schedule included many of our cities represented on this board. I had intended to view it here in S.D. but had a "religious" conflict of sorts and since there was only one screening, if you miss it, you miss out (I guess until it's released to video). I much prefer watching movies in a real theater, though.

Well, nobody ever answered me about that one, so I have to assume that movie was never seen anywhere outside of L.A., New York and San Diego. Until now, that is.

Who wouldn't want to be at the Hall of Fame for this film festival, going on all weekend.

DRG, it came out in '99 and it's hard to believe you don't know it, but the synopsis is that of an aging pitcher and the woman he's involved in a relationship with. It's kind of sappy, but Kevin Costner plays the pitcher (which is a plus, in my book), and whatever shortcomings the story has in terms of the romance upstaging the action on the field can be overlooked with Vin's play-by-play throughout the last game Costner's character pitches, as the love story is told in flashbacks.

Costner personally recruited Vin as the right man for the job of calling the masterpiece his character pitches. Vinnie said it was fun for him and much easier because in this role, Vin had the luxury of knowing the outcome and what would happen with each batter BEFORE they came to the plate. Smile

He scripted the words that would accompany each play.

Re-reading some of these posts reminded me that I never found the moive "The Winning Team" with Ronald Reagan and Doris Day. I need a trip to the Central library to check. maybe Sue can help find it.

The last time we posted on this thread prior to 11/12/06 was April! wow! Not sure if I seen another new (to me) BB movie.

BTW, speaking of Vin, I am so excited about Vin Scully chat on Tuesday!!! Very Happy

Crz, you don't necessarily have to shlep all the way to Central Library to get the video. I THINK you can ask to have it sent to a branch near you. Here's how:

Go to the LAPL catalog (home page: http://lapl.org) and click on "Brows the Catalog." Enter your title, and when you see the record for the one you want (in this case, the first one), click on it. On the left-hand column, there's a link (that looks like the library card) which says, "Place hold." Follow the instructions, and have it sent to a branch.

Awesome Sue! Thank you so much!! I found it! BUT when I selected it (it says not checked out), and clicked on put on hold it said "Copies not Found" At least now I know that they have it at the Central Library. I've been taking the train to work, actually two trains so I change trains in Union Station. I can go from there to the Central Library.
