It has been a tough adjustment to D1 play for UCSD and they host UC Davis this weekend. But, there was a nice profile of senior righty Brandon Weed whose record is 17-5 over his 3 years with the Tritons - article from Union Tribune

I was happy my Padres played so well over the weekend but not so much my Aztecs! They were swept by UNLV! Sad They need to really shore up the pitching to be taken more seriously, and it would most likely be too late for this year, but they still have a shot to do something if they figure things out. Article from Union Tribune

I've been worried about their pitching all season. You can't just expect to outslug the other team every time out.

Thanks Sunny. We are coming up on the end of the regular season here so there is a lot to be excited about.

You talk about being really streaky, the Aztecs have been that way for a couple of weeks. Every series they played in was a sweep whether they swept it or were swept.

Dixie State - Aztecs swept

Nevada - Aztecs got swept

SJSU - Aztecs swept

UNLV - Aztecs got swept

AF - Aztecs swept

Last series is coming up at UNM. And then the tournament.

Sunnyblue, no the tournaments will not be played this year. It seems confusing since they were cancelled due to COVID. But why is that when the rest of the playoff format is the same and would still involve traveling?

Both the Aztecs and Toreros need to have good weekends to advance. Toreros play Gonzaga on the road and they must sweep. Aztecs are playing at home and need to sweep New Mexico and then still hope Nevada has a losing weekend. So both teams are on the edge of the bubble with little chance at playoffs unless everything lines up just right. There are a few different scenarios described in the article in the Union Tribune - linked here

Article also says SDSU catcher Wyatt Hendrie was named Mountain West Player of the Week for the third time this year!

That's unfortunate because it limits their opportunities at postseason play, but I agree, it doesn't seem to make sense.

That scenario did not play out well because they did not sweep, unfortunately.
A memo to Aztecs scouting, please look for more pitching depth next year. Rolling Eyes

UCSD had such a hard transition this year but at least they ended the season with a bang on that grand slam.

Just one final post for this one to note that Rick Vanderhook is retiring after a good run with CSUF. Too bad his last season had to be a clunker.

Yes, it really is too bad. Congratulations to Coach Vanderhook.
